Although it may not seem that maps and atlases are a regular purchase for many people there are few households (or cars!) in the UK that don't contain some maps and at least one type of atlas. People buy maps and atlases for various reasons. They may, for example, be a collector of historical copies or they may simply want a local map at hand to help them get around. Some vehicle drivers will still rely on a road atlas and walkers, hikers and climbers probably wouldn't get anywhere without ordnance survey maps and map books. Parents of school age children may also find this kind of reference book comes in handy at homework time!
If looking to buy a map or an atlas then you will need to first work out specifically what the map or atlas is needed for. The needs, for example, of a person is looking to give a coffee table historical atlas as a gift are very different from those of a driver who wants a road map that can help him or her navigate all over the UK!
Types of maps and atlases
Maps come in all shapes and sizes nowadays and are used for a variety of reasons. For example, some people like to buy historical maps simply because they have an interest in the subject. They may perhaps buy books that contain old maps of their town, a reference book on historical maps of Europe or they may even buy a map and have it framed to hang on the wall.
From a practical perspective most modern maps are designed to actually help people get from A to B and, as such, they need to contain up to date data. This is especially important given the fact that so many places are seeing new housing and industrial estates spring up on a regular basis in the UK -- many maps nowadays can be out of date in just a couple of years!
Some people like to buy map books such as the well-known London A to Z which comes in a variety of sizes from coffee table size down to a pocket version. Others prefer to buy specific maps that are folded into a small rectangle or square and which, when unfolded, show a map of an entire city, town, region or area. Ordnance survey maps are a little more complicated and are used by walkers and hikers, for example, to help them find their way around.
Again, atlases come in all shapes and sizes. Many people like to have a reference copy of a World Atlas at home either on the shelf or for use as a coffee table book. Some atlases give more information than others -- some are more pictorially interesting and some give more data on the country in question, its history and culture. And, there are all kinds of children's atlases available which can be useful when helping younger kids learn about the world (and do their homework!).
Many people enjoy owning historical maps and atlases -- either as reference books or as coffee table talking points. It is always interesting, for example, to see how the place where you live has changed over time. Historical atlases are also particularly interesting. These books can be very useful for children as they can help them understand the history of how the world was shaped and formed over the years both under natural influences and under the influence of mankind.
Historical maps and atlases are also big business for collectors. Some only collect maps and / or atlases on certain subjects or places whilst others will collect them in general. Obviously, with many historical subjects, these books will not generally be found on the high street and will need to be picked up second hand.
Buying maps and atlases second hand
If buying maps and atlases second hand for reference use at home or when getting from A to B, then remember that these books and products may date over time. So, a road atlas from the 1960s will not help a driver negotiate his or her way round a ring road system that was built in the 1990s! Although, it has to be said that many collectors would find the original atlas of interest!
So, if the map or atlas will be used then check that it is relatively up to date before buying it. If you are primarily collecting maps and atlases (especially historical ones) then this is not so much of an issue and it is often the development of a place or region that interests many avid collectors.
Historically, many purchased maps and atlases from book shops and specialist stores but nowadays it's becoming more common to find a map or atlas online -- especially when it comes to buying a second-hand product. If this is the intention, then make sure to ask the seller as many questions as possible about the quality and condition of the map or atlas. Check if it has pages missing, for example, or what condition the cover is in. Ask them why they are selling it.
A person that collects old maps and atlases may need to put in a little more effort into quality control as their purchase may be more expensive. The easiest way to check on the condition of a map or an atlas if buying it second hand online is to ask the seller to be very specific about defects and overall condition. They may also provide photos of the item which can be useful if it is not possible to see it first hand.
