Men's interest books are a difficult commodity to define, as what may interest one man may bore another to tears. However, generally, autobiographies, thrillers, horror and sports-based novels are books that men often find interesting. The Internet is an excellent source for their purchase, with thousands of websites offering new books for sale at competitive prices. Delivery is usually prompt (though may have to be paid for). Should a book need to be returned for replacement or refund, this can usually be accomplished swiftly, with no hassle.

BUYING MEN'S INTEREST MAGAZINES (NON-ADULT THEMES)
Guides to pole-dancing venues alongside advice on soft furnishings, along with a smattering of celebrities in their knickers, constitutes the world of "men's general interest" magazines. General men's interest magazines were the publishing phenomenon of the 1990s, pioneering a whole new "Lads" market. With market maturity, numerous titles entered the market sector, some copying the successful formula of existing titles, while others sought establish distinct (and thus profitable) segments within the sector as a whole. Particularly amongst younger readers, there is a consciousness of the risqu content of such magazines, and its potential to cause embarrassment of offence to female work colleagues and / or partners. This has lead some mean to alter their behaviour in situations where there is potential for conflict.

Men's magazines can be divided into five broad categories:
  • Health
  • Gadgets
  • "Lads"
  • Fashion
  • Sports and Hobbies
The general consensus is that men's magazines are a good "junk" read. A news / gossip element is required to keep most readers buying regularly, though few men consider men's magazines as a suitable way to keep up to date with men's issues. Humour and a broad range of subject matter are considered to be key elements constituting a "good read." General men's magazines are bought to provide a light hearted, entertaining read. The broad based content, irreverent humour and especially scantily clad girls are viewed as major attractions. Studies reveal that very few readers could name any regular columnists, suggesting that it is not the quality of the writing that is the sought after commodity in such magazines.

Generally, amongst men who read magazines, awareness of magazine titles is high, but real familiarity reduces sharply outside the "core repertoire" of the reader. However, readers have strong views as to what they like or don't like, even though they may not be particularly familiar with some titles.

For the majority of men, buying magazines is a straightforward process. In most cases, purchases are made impulsively whilst in the newsagent's. Where the decision to buy has been made in advance, this is often in response to an expected period of free time or travel. A magazine's front cover plays an important role in attracting potential purchasers in such an impulsive market. Readers are unlikely to make a specific trip to buy a particular magazine. They tend to be exposed to magazines regularly, so numerous opportunities to purchase are presented, within the course of any given month. Most men appear to be aware of the advantages of subscribing to a magazine (cost, early receipt) but generally prefer to purchase magazines from a newsagent's or bookshop for several reasons:
  • Inconsistent quality
  • Unpredictable content
  • Lack of loyalty to any one magazine title
With regard to trust, the general interest titles perform very poorly. Most readers would not take advice given by such magazines, preferring specialist publications in a given field, or magazines perceived to give independent advice. This lack of trust is not seen as a major problem, however, as most readers are of the opinion that general interest magazines are not to be taken seriously anyway.

The total size of the men's magazine sector, as well as sales of individual magazines has declined in recent years, perhaps due to reader apathy, failure to encourage new readers or a lack of innovation.

SECOND-HAND BOOKS AND MAGAZINES
The Internet is undoubtedly an excellent source for purchasing second-hand books and magazines, as the range of titles available is almost endless. Prices are generally extremely competitive. However, as with any other Internet purchase, there are numbers of pitfalls of which to be wary. With books and magazines, the most important factor is condition. Although pictures of items for sale are generally available, if is often difficult to deduce the precise condition of an item. Contacting the seller is usually possible, and the majority, especially dealers are genuine.
