Rather than buying expensive garments that can only be worn occasionally, try to concentrate on a few versatile clothes that are suitable for wearing in the day and in the evening, for both weekdays and weekends.

Here are some tips for buying essential men's clothing :

1. Formal Trousers : A good pair of formal trousers that can be worn to work is essential to every man's wardrobe. Choose a pair of well-tailored trousers that you can wear to work, for a casual lunch, or out for the evening.

2. Jeans: Invest in a pair of high quality, well fitting dark blue jeans. Since many work places have adopted "dress-down Fridays," these are an excellent addition. Wear your jeans with a jumper, a stylish shirt or even a polo shirt. A pair of dark jeans is also a useful addition to your weekend wear, especially for casual dates.

3. Jumper: A jumper in a neutral colour is a must. V-neck or crew neck collars are both okay. A simple wool jumper can be worn alone (ideally not a V-neck) with a pair of corduroys on the weekend, or with a white shirt underneath for a slightly classier look.

4. White Shirt:Everything on this list will look great with a well tailored white shirt. Wear it underneath your jumper, by itself, or with your suit and tie. For a special occasion, add a pair of cufflinks.

5. Coat: A classy looking, but flexible, coat is imperative for the autumn and winter months. A trench coat (or similar) is an excellent choice for several reasons :
  • For starters, this coat can be worn to work as well as formal or casual occasions.
  • The climate versatility of the trench coat is another great reason to add it to your wardrobe. Many trench coats are waterproof to a certain extent making it perfect for rain or snow.
  • They are also light and therefore can be worn in the spring with just a t-shirt, or during the chillier months with a jumper underneath.
When choosing a colour, black always works. Otherwise, choose a neutral colour like beige or brown.

6. Black Suit : Often, an unexpected event needs you to be well turned out, with little notice. Whether for an interview or a funeral, there is no time to buy something new. Having a well-tailored black suit will ensure that you're always prepared for any situation.

Rules to Pick the Perfect Suit
Unfortunately, the majority of the suits men wear look dreadful. It appears that many men either don't care or don't know to wear a suit properly. A properly worn suit looks good everywhere. It is a complete outfit that should never fail.

General Rules for Buying a New Suit

(i) Fabric : You cannot go wrong with worsted wool suit. Look for a fabric that springs back after it's squeezed.

(ii) How the trousers fit : The waistband of your trousers need to be comfortable. If you are able to stick two fingers into the waistband while you're wearing them, then they fit properly. If you are a little chubby in the stomach area, (don't kid yourself) wearing trousers with a single or double pleated front provides a distraction. If you are thinner, pleats only make you appear skinnier.

(iii) Sleeve length : The sleeve length needs to be exact and correct. Otherwise, you'll end up looking someone who borrowed his little brother's suit at the last moment. The jacket sleeve should just reach the base of your thumb, revealing " to 1" of shirt cuff.

(iv) Trouser hem : Trousers should reach your shoes. Plain hems or turn-ups both work; plain hems give the impression you are taller, while turn-ups give the appearance of more maturity.

(v) Jacket waist :The jacket needs to fit comfortably and easily across your stomach in order to appear professional. Traditional suits known for their signature two buttons are now being replaced by fitted suit jackets with three and four buttons. Shop around for fitted waistlines that enhance the shape of your body.

(vi) General Fit of the Suit : A well fitting suit should allow stretching, bending and a free range of arm movement.

7. Ties: Neutral ties, in solid colours are excellent to simply to wear every day to work, for spur-of-the-moment business meetings or classy nights out on the town. While colourful, ornate or "novelty" ties are wonderful fashion accessories, a plain tie is more useful for everyday wear.

8. Formal Shoes : Casual or semi-casual shoes are appropriate for work. However, always ensure you have a pair of formal shoes. Black is probably the best colour, as it "goes" with everything. Look for quality, comfort and simplicity so you can wear them for any "dressy" occasion.

9. Jewellery and Accessories:Any outfit can be "jazzed up" for a particular occasion by the appropriate addition of jewellery and accessories. When you need to look your best for a smart function a pair of cufflinks and an elegant tie are essentials. You will need a comfortable watch for day-to-day wearing and a practical bag with plenty of room for your paperwork and PDA. For your all important leisure time, you might need a lanyard for hitting the water, warm gloves for the great British winter and cool sunglasses for that hard-earned holiday. Whether you are looking to fulfil a practical need or make a bold fashion statement, make sure you have all the right accessories.
