The types of metalworking services required at home and those required in business are entirely different from each other. Around the home, a metalworking service is mainly all about decoration and restoration of antique pieces or perhaps railings and gates. In a business it's generally related to dip brazing, anodizing, hydro-forming, deep drawing, heat treating, piercing, blanking, forming, metal stamping and other related activities.

Let's first discuss the metalworking services potentially required at home.

Metalworking Services required at Home
The most visible uses of metal in every household are probably found in the various lamp shades, holders and chandeliers that adorn walls and ceilings. Not to be forgotten, are those mantelpieces and antiques that lend elegance to a living room - along with the railings, floor grates and ornate grillwork that are often found on the exterior of houses.

Finding each of these pieces requires hours of searching in the shops. In some cases, having trawled the antique shops you may have found a piece that requires a little attention. In some cases you may simply be unable to find the right piece.

The beauty of metal meeting light is fully apparent when you look at a quality brass lamp shade or a stunning chandelier. You should choose a metalworker who is willing to lend you a patient ear and is prepared to custom make products that suit your requirements, taste and of course budget.

Equally, that stunning wrought ironwork at the front of the house or in the gates will require considerable attention over the years. It may simply need a good rub down and stiff wire brush cleaning followed by application of rust proofing paint and a top coat or two. Alternatively, you may have broken rails or joints that require welding. Since many of these items are extremely heavy or, in the case or railings, permanently fitted, you may need to find a mobile metalworker willing to effect a repair on site. Finish and Sealing Options
You should choose someone who can give you a large choice of finishes and provide sealing options where necessary. He/she should also be able to guide and counsel you as to what would be most appropriate in a particular location.

There are a vast number of standard finishes available for metalwork items. They range from polished, brushed, satin, light antique, dark antique in brass, copper and nickel and polished and brushed in chrome. Some people prefer the more exclusive verdigris and rust finishes too. These finishes, being less common, tend to vary from batch to batch. If you're choosing these finishes, try to find a supplier who will provide uniformity, otherwise the odd ones tend to stand out and spoil the symmetry.

Most customers prefer to opt for sealing once the finish is in place. There are two types of finishes which are popular - gloss lacquer and satin lacquer. Both these sealings can be removed with a paint stripper. In those specific cases where natural aging is the look you're after, it's recommended that you at least go for a wax sealant as protection against unsightly marks left by fingerprints during installation.

Metalworking Services required at a business premises
Metalworking takes quite a number of forms in business. It entirely depends on what sort of business you have and what its requirements are. Two of the most common types of metalworking requirements are discussed here:

Anodising
If you're dealing with aluminium then you're most certainly aware that an electrolytic passivation process increases the capacity of the metal to fight corrosion. Starting from the aluminium used in aircraft right down to cookware, cameras, mp3 players and sporting goods, all of these require anodising.

If the lubrication properties of the components you produce are not critical, you may also require sealing to block the pores that occur in the course of anodizing. If you're dealing with consumer items where external appearance is of prime importance, you may also opt for dyeing carried out before the sealing takes place.

Before you choose a provider, ensure that he or she has the required technical infrastructure ready at his or her premises, to carry out the job effectively. Does the vendor have adequately trained manpower that can, for example, accurately chase threaded holes with taps, to restore the original dimensions after anodizing is over?

Heat Treatment
Anybody dealing with metals is very much acquainted with the five step process of annealing, case hardening, precipitation strengthening, tempering and quenching. Heat treatment is absolutely essential to prepare the metal for certain jobs.

Without going into the technical details as to what each of these processes do to the metal at different stages (since you will be familiar with it), it is worth re-iterating that the provider will need a reasonably large infrastructure to handle large scale heat treatment jobs.

He or she must have an electric furnace and qualified staff of trained metallurgists, since any under- or over- dose of heat treatment may spoil the metallurgical properties of the job. Improper heat treatment shows up much later in the form of minor cracks and in compromised output when the final machining is almost over. Any mistake in heat treatment cannot be undone.

So, be very careful while choosing a metalworkng provider and always include an indemnity clause in the contract for faulty workmanship.

Conclusion
Metal is with us in every walk of life. It is one of the materials that we perhaps take most for granted. From the casing of your MP3 player to the wrought iron gates on your drive, metallurgists and metalworkers have influenced the shape, durability and design of the piece. Whether you're scouting for metalworking services for your home or business, be judicious before making a final choice.
