Durability, variety and value are three words synonymous with cars by Mitsubishi, the company itself synonymous with diamonds - three of them in fact, as that is the meaning behind the word 'Mitsubishi'. And what this Japanese manufacturing giant has meant to the world in its 90 years of trading is a universal appeal across a wide section of drivers, because whatever it is you are looking for in a vehicle, you are sure to find a model in the Mitsubishi range that meets the needs of your lifestyle. It may not be a brand that springs to mind when thinking of performance cars, but Mitsubishi is certainly
producing some of the fastest road going saloons on the planet and some of the smartest people-carriers at great value prices.

Pioneers of innovation and performance
It was way back in their humble beginnings in 1917 that Mitsubishi laid firm ground for their reputation as innovators in the worldwide automotive industry. They created the Model A, Japan's very first passenger car powered by a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine generating 35 horsepower. The innovation continued with the creation of Japan's first diesel engine, its first large bus, its first four-wheel drive and its first diesel truck.

Mitsubishi soon began to demonstrate the tough durability of their vehicles, which further strengthened their name as the years went by. The big break came in the 1970s when their Galant and Lancer models achieved considerable success in international rallies, winning prestigious awards the world over for their performance. In the 1980s it was the Shogun that excelled itself as Mitsubishi's champion, winning '4x4 of the year' awards in several countries. Last year the Mitsubishi Pajero won the Dakar rally for the 7th consecutive year! This sort of track record clearly justifies Mitsubishi's synonymity with great performance - whether in the toughest international rallies, on the busiest of our city streets, or in the freedom of our open countryside, and it's performance delivered by a such a wide spectrum of models that just about everybody is catered for.

Headway into Europe
By 1990, Mitsubishi realised that to make real headway into the European car arena, they were going to have to follow in the footsteps of Nissan and Toyota and set up production here. They teamed up with Swedish Volvo and applied advanced manufacturing techniques to introduce the Carisma, their first European hatchback, marketed very specifically to appeal to what were considered to be conservative European tastes. The Carisma was well built and provided a comfortable driving environment with ample legroom, seat height and steering wheel adjustment and excellent air control within the cabin as well as spacious storage in the rear. But the fact that this was never intended to blow minds with pioneering technology or unconventional looks has proved to be beneficial for the second-hand market - you can pick up a Carisma today for less than 5,000 and have a good-sized family hatchback you can rely on.

'Mitsubishi Motors Europe' was set up in 2002 specifically to coordinate sales on the European market, and within this context they introduced the quirky youthful-looking Colt, another model now proving itself to be a very desirable catch on the second-hand market. Ideal for the young first-time buyer on a limited budget, it is affordable to run, it holds its value well, and it scores well on the carbon emissions front. All models come with twin front airbags, anti-lock brakes, deadlocks and remote central locking as standard, so safety and security are well covered.

No introduction to Mitsubishi would be complete without covering the famous and awesome Lancer Evolution. Affectionately known as 'Evo', this was one of the smartest WRC rally cars for many years, and proved devastating in the hands of drivers like Tommi Makinen. It spawned a range of road cars that are as quick or quicker than a Porsche cross country, with a 2 litre turbocharged engine mated to a sophisticated 4wd system providing safe and predictable handling for four occupants.

MPVs and 4x4s
It is really in the 4x4 and people-carrier market that Mitsubishi have proved themselves to be a cut above the rest. The sleek and stunning Grandis was the follow-up to the Colt in a recent European product revival drive. A seven-seater combining dynamic sporty looks with a soft, comfortable and spacious interior, this smart MPV really has proved itself well able to cope with the ups and downs of family driving. Available in petrol or diesel, all models are well-equipped and excellent value for money. Even the most basic model offers alloy wheels, a trip computer, keyless entry, a CD player and climate control as standard.

For those seeking even more space, the Mitsubishi Delica accommodates up to 8 people within its huge interior. The name is coined from 'delicate' and 'carry', and this interesting slant on the conventional people carrier can certainly be trusted to carry your family and your luggage delicately. 'What MPV' and '4x4 magazine' voted it their best buy of the year and from outside and in, it's clear to see why. Its interior console allows you to control the electric tailgate and powered sliding rear doors straight from the driving seat, and its Hummer-style front grille and solid alloys contrast with its smooth, boxy exterior design to give it bags of character.

Equally generous on space is the 7 seater Shogun, which has become a Mitsubishi legend after its 20 years on the road. It has come in for a whole host of improvements over the years, resulting in the perfect combination of road handling, suspension, speed and looks. This is a masterful looking vehicle which is good fun to drive both on and off road; the design incorporates a rear differential lock that makes light work of the worst ground conditions for a smooth ride every time.

Buying a used Mitsubishi
Only a small selection of Mitsubishi's models have been covered here, but they all tell the same story of performance and good value spanning a range that covers a wide variety of needs. On the second hand market, Mitsubishi offers some very rich pickings to those who are astute and discerning about their requirements. When making a choice, always look for opportunities to do a deal with your seller, and avoid paying a premium for extras that you do not need. These days however, most of these little luxuries tend to come as standard on Mitsubishi's extensive range, and by buying into this market you can be sure you will be investing in a top of the range vehicle which will meet your needs for many years to come
