In our modern society disability should no longer be a barrier to learning, to having access to goods, facilities and services or to employment. New, technologically enhanced disability products are available for those with physical challenges, making it easier for them to perform activities within the normal range of a person. These products together with an adequately adapted environment can facilitate integration into society.

DISABILITY AIDS
Many different aids and adaptations can help you in your own home. For example, if you find it difficult to get in and out of the bath, a grab rail or a special bath seat might help. Adaptations to doorways in your house can allow you to use a wheelchair to get around. There are also hundreds of simple gadgets, which can help you with daily tasks like cooking, washing, dressing, using the toilet and bathing.

Local Authority and NHS Equipment
Your Local Authority or the NHS may provide some equipment and adaptations. Your Local Authority can provide things like:
  • Grab rails
  • Stair lifts
  • Blocks to make chairs and beds higher
  • Raised toilet seats and bath seats
You will need to have an assessment of your needs. An Occupational Therapist may visit you to give you expert advice on what equipment will suit your needs. However, your Local Authority will have set rules about whom they will provide equipment to, often referred to as "eligibility criteria." If you are at risk if you do not have the equipment provided you would have a greater chance of qualifying for help. Some equipment, such as continence equipment and commodes, can be provided through the NHS. You should contact your GP surgery to find out how you can get this help. If you have had an assessment from your local authority, they should help you to get the health equipment that you need. Your local British Red Cross may loan out disability equipment such as wheelchairs and commodes. However, you will probably find that they need you to be referred to them by a social worker or a health professional.

Buying Equipment from Private Companies
If you are not eligible to get equipment from your Local Authority or the NHS, you might want to consider buying your own. There are lots of companies that sell disability aids. However, it's often a good idea to get some advice before you go ahead and buy something. Equipment can be expensive and it is important to get something suitable for your needs.

MOBILITY AIDS TOP TIPS
Some companies use high-pressure sales tactics and don't take enough care that the product is suitable.
The important things to remember are:
  • Choose a reputable supplier.
  • Do not be rushed into a decision.
  • Get appropriate advice if you're unsure about the right product.
Think about how you want to use the item. For example, do you want a mobility scooter to help you get to the shops a couple of times a week, or do you want to do longer trips on a regular basis? In the latter case, you will need a larger, more powerful model. Also, think about whether you need one that can be carried by car. Ensure you can get the scooter into your house, and that you have somewhere to charge its battery. If you need a ramp, you will probably have to finance this yourself. Make sure you are physically able to use the item. For example, is your eyesight good enough to use a scooter safely?

Make sure you get everything in writing, including and "special deals" or discounts you are offered. Try to agree a period of approval, to give you the chance to try out the goods. Get any agreement in writing, clearly defining the length of this period. If the goods cost more than £100, consider paying by credit card rather than cash or cheque> This gives you rights with the credit card company as well as the supplier.

Some powered wheelchairs and electric scooters must be registered with the DVLA. There are rules about when and where they can be used. The Department of Transport can advise, and also tell you if you need a licence or need to pay Vehicle Excise Duty. It also make good sense to have insurance, to cover you, other people and the vehicle in the event of an accident. Most importantly, be safe! Get some training if you have never used, or it is a long time since you used, a motor vehicle.

OTHER MEDICAL AIDS

Hearing Aids
Hearing aids are available in a variety of different shapes, sizes & types. Digital hearing aids are the latest in hearing aid technology and have a small computer inside them. This computer will process the sounds that the hearing aid receives. Having a small computer in them allows your hearing aid audiologist to customise the hearing aid to suit your hearing loss perfectly. Digital hearing aids can also be cleverly programmed with preset settings. These presets are for different sound environments, for example a quiet room, an auditorium or a busy shop. If you require it, these presets can often be turned on or off using a small remote control (for example a special watch) so that the mode can be changed very discretely.
The benefits of digital hearing aids can be:
  • Customised to suit your hearing.
  • Clearer listening in different environments.
  • Your hearing aid is less likely to give feedback (i.e. whistle).
  • Some digital hearing aids can identify noise and reduce the amplification required (providing more comfortable usage).
Completely in-the-canal hearing aids
These are small hearing aids that fit into the ear canal. They are smaller than in-the-ear hearing aids and are less visible. This type of hearing aid is not likely to be suitable if you have a severe hearing loss.

In-the-ear hearing aids
These hearing aids fit entirely into your ear and can be used for a wide range of hearing losses. The main parts of the hearing aid are usually found in a small compartment attached to the moulded part of the aid.

Behind-the-ear hearing aids
These hearing aids provide excellent sound quality and have an ear mould that will be fitted inside your ear. The rest of the hearing aid (including the microphone) is located behind your ear.
