The Morgan is the marmite of the automotive world - you either know you have to own one at least once in your life, or you will never even consider one. A symbol of the halcyon days of British motoring, before congestion charges and even before motorways, there is no doubt that it is certainly a car that everybody will always look twice at. Its unique style is best envisaged cruising down country lanes through Cotswolds villages. No other car is so quintessentially English or embodies English traditions quite like it. Yet it stands as an equal beside BMWs, Mercedes and Audis and races alongside them with all the gusto of a 21st century dream machine.

The Morgan Motor Company
The Morgan motor company was established in 1909 and has been run until today by members of the same family at their factory in Malvern Link in Worcestershire. The factory has changed little in 100 years, not surprising when we consider that all cars are assembled there by hand. With production levels only reaching 14 a week, it stands to reason that buying a Morgan from new implies extensive waiting times which have historically been known to rise to ten years! What differentiates Morgans from all other cars is the body substructure which is built entirely of wood; genuine English ash to be precise. Morgan production at Malvern is craftsmanship as its very best and the attention to detail and quality of build can be seen by looking under any chassis. As for engine power and performance, the craftsmen at Morgan use only state of the art engines and components with the best design refinements. These cars are as safe and smooth to handle on the open road as any other car in their class.

The range
As for the limited but endearing range of models, they each add their own individuality to the legend that is Morgan. The original Plus 8, designed back in 1968, was the two door roadster with 3922cc 3.5 L Rover-sourced V8 engine, an icon of its time. It passed Euro 3 standards but in 2006 the Euro 4 engine exhaust gas emission levels came into force for all vehicles registered from this date. The Plus 8 fell short of requirements; a substantial reduction of pollutants was required in order to comply. Morgan's response to this was the creation of the new V6 roadster, a funky new machine that uses Ford's more environmentally friendly 2,967cc six-cylinder 3.0 v6 engine, as seen in the Jaguar S-type model.

Another top model in the range is the Plus 4. Originally built in the 1950s, it has undergone enhancements and refinements to bring it right up to the present day. The latest model has an impressive power to weight ratio and a 2 litre Ford Duratec engine with 142 Bhp, which will propel you from 0 - 60 in 7 seconds and grips the sharpest corners flat and true.

Back in the very beginning Morgan began production with three wheelers, which could avoid British tax on motor cars by being classified as motorcycles. The Morgan 4/4, slightly smaller than the Plus 4 and the roadster, is the descendant of the first four wheeled car that Morgan produced back in 1936. Back in the old days, it used a Ford side-valve engine and a three speed gearbox. The name means 'four wheels, four cylinders', and today this vintage beauty has changed little in looks but runs on a modern 1800 cc Ford Zetec engine and is bang up to date with its five-speed gearbox.

Morgans are fantastic for eternal bachelors, ladies that lunch or couples that like to cruise lazily down leafy avenues, but what if there are more of you? Well surprisingly enough, Morgan has even catered for the family with its unique 4 seater. Looks-wise, it harks back to the days of vintage horse-drawn carriages. In recent years the model has undergone extensive restyling in the rear, the two rear seats are large enough for two full sized adults to sit comfortably, and both seats can be completely folded down to create ample luggage space. Some 2006 models have 18 inch stainless steel wire wheels, and there are also two different engines used with this model, both of them variations on Ford's reliable Duratec engine, to deliver the trusted Morgan performance and reliability.

Last but definitely not least, we move to the ultra-modern radical new Aero 8. First unveiled in 2000, it was Morgan's first new model for 50 years and came as quite a surprise to the world of classic motoring. A 2 seater supercar, it is like nothing that has ever been seen before. With its voluptuous aluminium body, electric windows, air conditioning, variable assistance power steering and state-of-the-art ABS, the Morgan motor company has certainly seen in the dawn of the 21st century in style.

Buying a used Morgan
Buying a Morgan second-hand is a very viable option, particularly when we consider depreciation and the waiting times for new pre-ordered vehicles. You can usually rely on Morgan's performance and reliability with its Ford and BMW sourced engines and fine tuning. The only point of concern with a second-hand Morgan is the ash frame, which should be checked for flexing. If you lift the doors up on their hinges and it tends to flex, this could indicate that the ash frame needs repairing, which is costly. A new frame should last at least 15 years. The back panel of the rear wing is also a point of vulnerability which should be checked for flexing in the same way. Rust can also be a problem, as with any second-hand car, and in the Morgan it tends to occur in the inner valences under the wing and the engine bulkhead. Of course, any cherished Morgan should come with a full service history; alarm bells should ring if it doesn't
