A motorbike owner will require a number of accessories and parts to enable and enhance the riding experience. A motorbike needs spare parts, including batteries and chargers, safety gear, such as the helmet, and motorcycle clothing, to make the ride safer and more comfortable. Motorcycle parts and accessories are often manufactured by well known brands. A motorcyclist may well be drawn to a specific brand, due to their personal preference. Most stockists sell a range of brands.

Where to buy parts and accessories
Motorbike parts and accessories can be bought from a number of different outlets. When looking to make a purchase it is worth considering the type of part that is required:
  • Genuine Bike Parts: These are sold by the manufacturer of the bike, genuine parts can usually be sourced from a bike dealership. It is generally advantageous to buy genuine parts as they have guaranteed compatibility, however this is probably the most expensive option.
  • Original equipment manufacture (OEM) parts: in some cases, the motorbike manufacturer will not produce all the parts themselves. OEMs often supply the bike manufacturers with the constituent parts. It may therefore be a cheaper option to go directly to the OEM to purchase parts, as if obtained through the dealer they will take a margin and pass this on to the buyer. It should be checked that the generic part produced by the OEM is compatible with the bike, as some parts are specific to a certain motorcycle.
  • Pattern parts: Pattern parts are copies of the original manufactured parts. Buying pattern parts may be a good option, as they are usually cheaper than the OEM or genuine parts. Pattern parts may also be necessary if an original part has been discontinued. The quality of pattern parts can be highly unpredictable. Whilst progress in technology can sometimes render them superior to the original versions, poor quality copies can also be produced.
  • Aftermarket motorcycle parts: Aftermarket parts are specialised products, which are designed to enhance the motorcycle, in some cases utilising better technology than the original parts. These enhancements include a change in design or the material from which a part is made. The purpose of aftermarket parts is, in general, to make individual adjustments, which could for example make the bike lighter, stronger or more aesthetically pleasing.
Motorcycle parts
The range of motorbike parts available on the market is huge. Parts that might need to be purchased include the following:
  • Mechanical parts:
    • Engine parts: Many engine components may need to be replaced at some point during the bike's lifetime, including cylinder heads, piston rings and engine valves.
    • Brakes: The bike may need replacement brake pads, rods or master cylinders.
    • Exhausts: Gaskets may be required to repair exhausts, new exhaust pipes can also be purchased.
    • Cables and chains: It may often be the case that cables need to be replaced in order to return the bike to its full working capability. The clutch and brake cables might require a replacement. Drive belts and chains may also need replacing.
  • Electrical parts:
  • Generators, fuses and spark plugs are amongst the parts that it may be necessary to replace in the bike's electrical system.
  • Accessories: In addition to parts for the operating systems of the bike a seemingly endless range of accessories can be purchased to go with the bike, below is a list of purchases that may be considered:
    • Cruise control.
    • Motorcycle covers
    • Leg shields
    • Seats and covers
    • Bike stands
    • Lights and reflectors
    • Maintenance manuals
    • Cleaning products
Rider Accessories
The motorbike rider MUST have a good quality helmet and goggles, which are widely available from all motorbike stockists. Other clothing that it would be wise to consider includes a toughened waterproof suit (including waterproof gloves); light reflecting vests; and motorcycle boots. Rider accessories also include mobile phone helmet headsets and luggage holders to fit to the bike. Many stockists specialise entirely in helmets and clothing.

Things to consider
In order to get the best deal it is worth shopping around. Obviously, if a replacement part is required, the most important factor to consider is whether or not the part is compatible with the bike. An incompatible part could end up causing damage to other parts of the bike and may invalidate your warranty. Used motorcycle parts can be very difficult to find, relying on someone having dismantled a bike and having a working, compatible version of the part that is desired. There are online search facilities for used parts, which are often found at motorcycle breakers or salvage yards. Breakers are businesses that are set up specifically to dismantle bikes for their parts. Often such bikes are undamaged and even unused. Obviously some caution should be practiced, some breakers have been known to deal with stolen bikes. However, legitimate breakers will only purchase bikes with the complete paperwork
