It is amazing how these tiny digital music devices have been adopted by teenagers, children, and even adults! Everywhere you go, you see them clipped to belts, bags, and car visors. There are many brands of MP3 players and they offer a myriad of options. Its quite a task to choose an MP3 player that is right for you. Most of us want a good player, but one that wont cost too much. Here is a handy guide to help you choose an MP3 player that fits your budget.

Principal Categories of MP3 Players
MP3 players come in two main categories flash and hard drive. MP3 flash players are smaller and cheaper than hard drive players. They tend to be more durable. Flash players are well suited to active, on-the-go lifestyles. They also fit well into a smaller budget. Some flash players may be upgraded allowing the player to grow with your needs and music collection. Hard drive MP3 players are larger and more expensive than flash players. They arent as durable as flash players but offset this by offering far greater storage capacity, with some handling video as well as music.

Both types of players can be purchased second-hand and depending on your needs, this can be a prudent less expensive purchase than buying a new MP3 player.

Features of MP3 Players
MP3 players have a myriad of features. There are sound, audio, and playback options and software for downloading and organising music. When you examine the player you are considering, check the options it has, the amount of memory, and the battery life. See if any accessories such as a carrying case are included. All MP3 players have unique model numbers so it is easy to do a ittle research online as to those that are likely to be most suitable before you start to look at what is on offer. Clearly, second hand MP3 players will not usually be the latest models although there are sometimes unwanted birthday gifts and bargains from technophiles who seem to change players every few weeks.

Storage Capacity
Whether a flash or hard disk player, all MP3 players have a finite storage capacity. Some can be upgraded and others offer the option of plug-in memory modules. Be realistic about your music collection: do you really need all 10,000 tracks with you wherever you go? The reality is that for many people, a relatively low capacity player will suffice for that jog, gym session or daily commute. It is really on longer journeys that the larger capacity players start to come into their own. Some of these are now classed as 'media players' with relatively large screens and support for lots of different music and video formats.

Displays
Make sure that the screen display on the MP3 player you are considering is bright enough and large enough to read, even in sunlight. It should have all the information you need to access files and manage your music. In general terms, the larger the player, the larger the screen and the more information it will display. By the time you get to media players you are looking at something that will compete screen-wise with many of today's dedicated portable DVD players.

Battery Life
Again, for many of us, an hour or so in the gym, jogging or on the train to and from work is going to be enough. Hard drive players and media players inevitably consume more power but have larger higher capacity batteries to compensate for this. Smaller players have built-in rechargeable batteries. Make sure that the charger is included with any purchase as these can be expensive to buy as an afterthought. Many models now come with an in-car charging option which will plug into the cigarette lighter or 12v power outlet. Some also provide you with the option of using standard alkaline 'AAA' or 'AA' batteries in addition to the built-in power source. This allows you to extend playback time but of ourse means carrying additional batteries.

Media Formats
Whilst the MP3 format is by far the most commonly used, the formats for which you need support will be determined by your own music collection. In addition to MP3, other popular formats include MP4, WMA, WAV, Ogg Vorbis and AIFF. A player can play these files only if it has the necessary software support built-in.

Connectivity
If you want to use your MP3 player with your existing HiFi or with your in-car system or a docking station you will need to check the physical connections it offers. Some have a standard mini-jack conection for which various interconnect cables are available. Other use a proprietary connector leaving you at the mercy of the manufacturer. Some also have optical out for audio and in the latest media models even HDMI, allowing you to connect the player to a high definition TV (HDTV).

Connectivity also matters in terms of a connection to your PC or laptop, allowing you to download music from the internet. Some players include a standard USB 1.0, or 1.1, interface, while others boast USB 2.0, or FireWire, for high speed downloads.

Brands
There are a great many electronics manufacturers that include MP3 players in their ranges. Notable amongst these are Apple, Creative Labs, Sandisk, Rio, Phillips, Algo, Sony, and Creative Zen. All of these build good players of various types, so unless you have personal knowledge of a player or a recommendation from friends and family, it is usually best stick to brands you can trust such as these.

Listening to hours of music during our daily lives was never so convenient. From waterproof units to anti-shock players, these tiny devices come in many models and two basic types - memory flash models and hard disk drive players. The players hold hundreds of songs, can be carried in a pocket, and have many optional features. No other audio device can supplant MP3 players in terms of usability and flexibility. Take some time to explore the available models and options before making a decision as to which to buy. A second-hand model may meet all your needs and could save you a significant amount of money.
