There are many natural and alternative therapies available that are both product and service based. Products range from the natural and alternative types that are commonplace and can be found in any supermarket to those that are less well known. These products are generally considered safer than manufactured products as they are based on natural plants, minerals and extracts from the Earth. Their properties and effects are usually backed up by considerable scientific research and are rarely associated with side effects or any long term damage. Service based therapies relate largely to Eastern Practices that have been introduced to the Western World such as holistic therapies and ancient Chinese practices. These therapies are also shown to have little in the way of long term damage and are increasing popular. As it is considered that Western medicine is more advanced, some believe that these practices have little effect but the increase in uptake of alternative therapy suggests that many believe they are very effective and recommend their use. In some cases they are arguably less risky than prescribed tablets, injections and so forth -- yet conveniently can be used in conjunction with these.

Why should you buy natural and alternative products and services?
These therapies are largely related to health and beauty. You can buy products to help with a number of common health problems such as a cold, head ache, sleeplessness, cough, soreness and skin irritation. There are also a number of other specific problems that these products can help from acne to angina. If you have a specific problem you can search the internet to see if there is a therapy available. There are also products to promote health such as supplementary vitamins and minerals that are available to buy. A number of products are also used to promote beauty as well as health such as hair health and shine products and natural products to use on skin, such as mud masks. Therapies are also used to promote health and well being and can be used for specific mental and physical health problems such as stress or muscle strain.

Alternative and Natural Products
There is a wide range of products that are readily available from non-specialist stores. For example, in supermarkets, products such as St Johns Wort are well known for helping people with sleeping problems and Omega 3 is a popular source of brain health promotion. You can also buy lots of vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin E which your body needs and can be a useful supplement if not getting enough of these from your diet. Minerals and mineral extracts are also in plentiful supply along with some natural skin products which fall into the health and beauty category. You can also buy lots of home products such as candles and crystals which are designed to alleviate stress and promote balance and harmony in the home.

Specialist companies offer a far wider range of items promoting health and beauty and a greater number of products that can be matched to specific health problems or promotions. These are usually, between 10-55, and are thus a little more expensive than supermarket alternative and natural items but they have been extensively researched in terms of their properties and ability to heal. These types of products should be bought from, specialists with online ordering or shops rather than paying large amounts of money to random sellers who claim they have miracle cures or charge extortionate prices for famous health promotional substances such as samples of the 'dead sea'. A specialist company should be able to show exactly what the product is and what it should help with, whether a specific problem or promoting health. For example, sodium and hawthorn berry extract assist with blood pressure and can improve circulatory problems but this is a very specific type of knowledge that relies upon natural therapies and is found on specialist sites. However, such alternatives to mainstream medical remedies and prescriptions are well worth considering and investigating to help with a specific problem or for general health and beauty purposes.

Alternative Therapy Services
There are an increasing number of professional therapists whose expertise and experience is within alternative or natural therapy. There are also increasing variations on some of the core therapies which include hypnotherapy, acupuncture and reiki. Acupuncture is the (ancient Chinese) practice of inserting fine needles inserted into specific points of the body as a corrective. It is thought to assist with a large variety of problems from infections to skin problems to pain such as migraines, back pain and arthritis, through to emotional and general and common health problems including IBS. Some alternatives might include acupressure which is similar to acupuncture and 'cupping' which also involves pressure on the skin where suction cups are put on the back leaving large red circles as opposed to small puncture wounds but is intended to have a similar effect on infections, back pain and stress.

Hypnotherapy is also a popular alternative therapy that is increasingly used for health problems relating to addiction and weight issues. There are some myths about hypnosis as many associate clinical hypnosis with stage hypnosis and think that it may result in bizarre behaviour if it goes 'wrong' or that they may not wake up from the 'trance' or be subject to the therapists 'control' at the click of a finger! However hypnosis merely taps into the sub-conscious as opposed to the conscious mind as it exerts greater power over our reason and will power as the sub-conscious contains our imagination, permanent memory and emotions. This is why it can be an effective way to tackle addiction but the effects do vary from individual to individual and it is essential that you use an established, ethical practitioner who can provide references from other patients.

Reiki is also popular for the promotion of well being. It is a type of therapy that teaches you how to live in harmony with the universe and to draw on its energy -- which surrounds us in the form of everything from other people to rocks. This promotes physical, mental and emotional well being and is often practiced using tools such as crystals. This is often taught as a course so that an individual can learn how to practice it for themselves.

Choosing alternative therapy
You should consider these therapies if you are looking into improving general health, have a specific problem or want to change your lifestyle for the better. For any medical condition, it is important that you also consult your GP and discuss any alternative therapies with them. Although many GPs won't necessarily endorse or enthuse about such remedies, they should be able to highlight any that could be counter-productive or even harmful from a medical perspective.
