Try not to reveal too much at once to help protect yourself. Be wary of giving out too much personal information online and the kinds of details a stranger shouldn't know; even giving out phone numbers too early on could be a mistake. If things progress and you decide it is time to meet face-to-face, be sure to tell someone where you're going and who you're going to meet. It's probably wise to meet in a public place for the first few times, and try to avoid giving out your home or work address: if things don't work out, you don't want anyone to know where you'll be at predictable times.

Making a choice really depends on what you're looking for. Whether it is friendship or love, or something a lot more casual, finding a like minded person should be a priority. Despite all the warnings, there are many great success stories. A study of online dating site members found that after couples had built up a significant relationship by e-mail and met for the first time, 94% went on to see each other again.
