Owning a pet is great fun, but with ownership comes responsibility. No one should ever take on pet ownership unless he or she knows how to care for their pet and understands the responsibilities that come with all types of pets.

Selecting a Pet
Selecting a pet is the most important step. Choose the right pet for your family by looking at your own lifestyle. How much time and money do you have for a pet? How much energy do you have to care for and play with the pet? Will you or someone else in the family take the primary responsibility to spend time, money, and energy caring for, exercising, and playing with a pet? Is anyone in the family afraid of any kind of pet? How much room do you have for a pet? Are pets allowed where you live? Is anyone allergic to dogs, cats, birds, or rabbits? The answers to these questions will determine if a pet is what you really want and what kind of pet will be best for your family.

Spaying or Neutering
In the case of most larger animals including dogs and cats, unless you are buying for the purpose of breeding, you will need to spay or neuter your pet. There are too many homeless animals in the world for you to ignore this responsibility. This is not the act of cruelty many believe it to be. Spaying or neutering will not only prevent unwanted offspring but it will in some cases help to prevent cancer and other diseases; make the pet feel calmer and more content; reduce urination indoors, and discourage fighting and even the chances of it running away. Certain types of pet are also less likely to get fat if they are neutered.

Protecting Your Pet
If your pet is mobile (cats, dogs, horses etc), be sure your pet has identification at all times, either on a tag or an implanted ID disc. If your pet gets loose or runs away, the ID may result in a happy reunion rather than incarceration in an animal shelter.

Be sure your pet has the required vaccinations and veterinary care, as needed.

For larger pets, you will need to fence your garden or keep your pet indoors. A dog larger than 10 pounds needs a lot of time outdoors so dont plan on keeping a dog of this size unless you have a decent sized garden or are willing to walk it at least a couple of times a day.

Caring For a Pet
  • Train your pet appropriately and discipline it gently and kindly. In general, the larger the pet, the greater the chances of training it. Dont plan on training small animals such as mice, rabbits (although some may be house trained), guinea pigs, reptiles etc.
  • Provide fresh water and recommended food daily.
  • Take your pet to a vet, as needed.
  • Spend time every day playing with your pet and grooming it, if required.
Conclusion
Think carefully before buying a pet. Determine the kind of pet for which your family is able and willing to care. Learn how to train, care for, and protect your pet and your family will spend many happy years enjoying the affections of well chosen animal or reptile.
