It has to be said; we Brits love our cars. In fact there are no less than 26 million registered on our roads and no country in the world has a bigger selection of makes and models on offer to buy. When we take into account the depreciation on a new car, it makes sense that around 8 and a half million of the cars sold in the UK each year are second hand - that's 3 times the number of new ones sold. If you buy from a dealer, you tend to pay a little bit more for the car, but then most dealers offer warranties, part exchange facilities and finance products. But if you fancy trying to pick up a bargain, it's the private ads that have the richest pickings, and if you know what to look for and how to check it out then buying privately can be a very satifying experience.

If you have set your heart on a Peugeot, chances are it's because you have already fallen for one of its attractive models. But before you take the plunge, it's certainly worth taking a step back and looking at the complete range on offer. When you are deciding what to buy it's important to remain realistic; it's very easy to get distracted by flash motors that don't fulfil your needs. It's also important to set yourself a realistic budget. Interest rates are pretty low at the moment but they do vary between lenders, so it's worth going online and comparing a few rates. Servicing, fuel and depreciation all need to be considered, as well as costs like insurance - it's an annual cost but it does come round very quickly.

Older Peugeots
If you're intent on a smart Peugeot but your budget is low, you might want to consider one of the older models which are in plentiful supply on the second hand market. The 106, one of the best of the old 90s superminis, offers outstanding fuel economy and is still an excellent ride, and its reputation has kept it at the top of its league. The 306 is available as a hatchback, saloon or estate car, with a wide range of engines, all offering an excellent ride. Practical and sturdy, the estate in particular is a practical model for the family, with a roomy load area and practical interior. Or perhaps you would consider the 205. The GTi model has become a classic and is highly sought after. Not surprising, considering the 205's resilient engine and excellent fuel economy.

The funky hatchbacks
When it comes to small and funky hatchbacks, Peugeot certainly comes up with some handsome motors. The 107 is an ideal first car for those who have just passed their test; it shares most of its components with the Toyota and therefore wins in the reliability stakes, and its side airbags make it the height of safety. The 206 hatchback is available in a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, is comfortable inside and has a spacious load area, as does the 207, available in four very nippy models. The newer 1007 is a delight and well worth a look. Its revolutionary electric doors open in such a way as to enable you to squeeze in even when the car is parked tightly, which can be a great relief at the supermarket! It is great value on the used car market, and not only is it great looking on the outside, it has a special interior trim system that can be replaced and updated whenever you fancy a change. Still holding its popularity with the ladies is of course the gorgeous 206 Coupe Cabriolet, ever more plentiful on the used car market, so finding one at a bargain price should not prove too much of a challenge.

Larger models
If you really need a larger model, the car to truly rival the 206 is the smart 307 convertible. The nifty folding metal roof is a joy, and you don't have to wait for those rare hot summer days to enjoy it. It's clever enough to be warm with the roof down even on crisp winter days, particularly if you cosy up with the heated seats on, and there's no compromise on the performance, or space in the boot. The newer 308, built to replace the 307, is longer and wider, but very similar in style, with an extremely comfortable, good quality, neat interior. Or perhaps you would consider the striking good looks of the 407, with its array of gadgets and extras, and its excellent five star crash test safety rating. Available in a saloon, SW (station wagon), estate and coupe, all models are refined and comfortable.

Carrying the family
Peugeot has been slow to make inroads into the people carrier market, but they have certainly made headway with the creation of the 807. There is no safer people carrier, which has to be great news for families. It has clever safety gadgets such as the innovative 'child check mirror' as well as an array of other exciting extras, and its seats can be adjusted and swivelled round when parked, to create a very comfortable little family sitting-room on the road. Peugeot created the 4007 as a team effort with Mitsubishi and Citroen, and it is another fine family vehicle, that fits five people very comfortably. It's also tough and durable and its diesel engine is surprisingly smooth and quiet. As far as safety is concerned, six airbags come as standard, and it scores high in the tests for side impact protection.

Whichever model you decide to go for in the extensive Peugeot range, understanding the adverts and making the most of your position as a buyer is a crucial part of buying your dream car. Look out for clues that your seller might be keen to do a deal, and be careful not to shell out hundreds of pounds on a fantastic stereo system if you only want to listen to Radio 2. Be wary of expressions like 'fully loaded' - you will find that much of the kit on the car would have been standard, so check the original spec and avoid paying a premium for extras that are of no use to you. Bear in mind also that the letter T at the foot of an advert indicates the word 'Trader' and should suggest to you that the seller is looking to make a profit, so you can expect to pay a little more here than if you are dealing with a private seller.

All that remains is to wish you luck with your choice. Practically all modern French cars are cool these days, and priced far below their German rivals. Most of them come as standard with all sorts of exciting electronic gadgetry such as rain-sensing wipers and tyre-pressure sensors to make them even more appealing.
