A plasterer provides services related to plaster, a material which provides the foundation for walls, ceilings, floors and various household fixtures. Plastering is a skilled trade and plasterers, like many who provide specialised services, may have a long list of clients. As a result, there may be a long wait to obtain their services.

Why Use a Plasterer?
A plasterer may be needed to participate in the construction of a home or to perform maintenance or repair in a home that is already constructed. Plasterers select, mix, and attach plaster mainly to walls and ceilings. Plaster is made by mixing sand and cement which is then applied in varying levels of thickness to a wall, floor or ceiling. Then, the material is built up until the required level of finish is achieved. When the plaster dries, it can be painted or decorated to the building-owners specifications.

How to Find a Plasterer
Finding a plasterer is easy, but it takes a bit of investigative work to find and hire a reputable one. Two good sources of information are the internet and the Yellow Pages -- however, these sources may only provide preliminary information regarding the services. Ask friends and family for referrals to plasterers they may have used in the past -- this is a quick and easy way of finding good tradesmen. A potential customer needs to consider the following when looking for a plasterer:
  • Services available -- All services should be listed. Home services may differ from business services
  • Cost per service, including materials -- A total cost estimate should be given before starting a project
  • Length of time in business -- A plasterer who has provided services for years is more skilled and is probably more reputable -- bad plasterers wont stay in business long
  • Location -- Local businesses are more accountable to customers
  • Contact information -- Street address, phone number, mobile phone number, internet/email address, all of which should be valid and recently published.
  • Licenses -- Appropriate to the services provided and must be current
  • Insurance -- For all services, personnel and materials provided -- insurance should cover any potential accidents or damage resulting from their services.
  • Availability -- Should be available when a project needs to be started and completed.
  • References -- Customers will provide details of their experiences with the plasterer -- should be asked to provide the names of other customers that the plasterer has had as clients.
Professional Bodies and Associations
Service businesses and the people who provide professional services are governed by licensing or certification agencies and associations. A reputable plasterer will have a certain level of certification, which is proof of their experience and ability in providing plastering services. Plasterers can have the following certifications:
  • NVQ, Level 1, 2, or 3 -- Given to a newly certified plasterer.
  • SVQ, Level 3 -- The highest level for a certified plasterer
  • CSCS -- Given to plasterers who work on construction sites -- this indicates that the plasterer has learned health and safety procedures.
  • FPDC -- An organisation which services independent professionals in the construction trades.
Checking References
A reputable plasterer will have references and customer testimonials that are easily available for verification. There are several areas to consider when checking a service-providers references:

  • Contact name, address, employer, employers phone number.
  • Reference dates, including length of time the reference has known the plasterer and their opinion of the work that the plasterer performed.
  • Comments about their work, both good and bad, including any concerns (reliability, honesty) that may still be valid.
Additional Areas of Caution
Once a plasterer has been located and a project has been discussed, there are several topics that need to be considered and negotiated before the final service contracts can be signed. These topics are:
  • Length of time in the plastering business -- Be specific, ask about projects and the details of those projects and ask the plasterer for a timeline that was used on a previous project.
  • Total costs -- Make sure all price quotes are final quotes, not just estimates. Also, make sure every price has been agreed upon and that everything (materials, labour, overtime) is included. The complete cost breakdown needs to be in writing and to contain both the plasterers and the customers signatures.
  • Project completion time -- Establish a timeline (beginning, middle, and end) for a project. If necessary, establish milestones (completion dates for each individual project) that should be reached, discuss any possible delays that may occur and ask the plasterer to explain how any delayed time can be minimised.
After the plasterer has been hired and the project start date has been agreed upon, arrange to meet at the project site so that the specific project locations (areas of a house or building) can be viewed and the actual work can be discussed. This will give the plasterer an orientation to the work project and it will provide a degree of security to the customer who will have the final approval of the plasterers work. Once the work is underway, monitor the progress of each project and use the contract to verify that each project is being completed on time.

This advice should help the selection of a reputable plasterer and make sure that the project is completed on time, is done well and falls within budget.
