The subjects of psychology, sociology and anthropology cover a wide range of different types of literature. However such books are not normally top of everyone's' reading list and its quite likely that you will require these books for some sort of educational purpose, or perhaps you have studied the subjects in the past and you're looking to keep up with current literature.

Buying psychology, sociology and anthropology books and magazines
You could be looking for a psychology, sociology or anthropology books for many different reasons; from studying at university or college to collecting some important literary works. Many of the larger book stores will have such a section and will carry many of the popular titles needed for study, however it might be harder to track down some or the more obscure and specific titles.

Anthropology
Anthropology is described as the study or science of man, which began to develop as a separate discipline in the 19th century. In its widest sense anthropology embraces human physiology and psychology as well as the study of human societies and all other aspects of human culture past and present.

When buying anthropology books it is worth knowing that the subject can be divided into different sub categories. In Britain the non-physical side of anthropology is traditionally divided into social anthropology and cultural anthropology. Cultural anthropology covers the whole range of human activities which are learned and transmitted. Social anthropology is more concerned with social institutions, social values, social organization, and social structure. Archaeology (which is seen as a branch or anthropology in America) is seen as a separate but related discipline.

There are some useful online resources that can help point you in the right direction when you're looking for different literary resources. www.anthropologie.net is a comprehensive list of anthropology resources arranged by country, topic, and university department. www.publicanthropology.org/Archive/archive.htm gives access to anthropology e-journals, writings, photographs, and a full-text archival collection of the following anthropological journals: American Anthropologist, Current Anthropology, Human Organization, and Anthropologica. Finally http://vlib.anthrotech.com gives links to relevant resources in applied anthropology, biophysical anthropology, ethnography, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology as well as to anthropological conferences, jobs, discussion forums, and organizations.

Sociology
Sociology can be described as the study of societies; both the description of social phenomena and the evolution of a conceptual scheme for these phenomena. Different strands may be recognized: curiosity about how a society hangs together, theories of social evolution, and the interpretation of these theories. Sociology does not separate a study of society into areas such as history, economics, or politics, but sees how all these aspects relate to one another.
Online resources giving information on Sociology included www.sociology.org; the electronic journal of sociology which gives public access to this peer-reviewed journal. There is also socioweb (www.socioweb.com) which is an excellent guide to sociological resources on the Internet.

Psychology
Psychology is the study of human behaviour and mental processes. Psychology is sharply divided into applied and experimental areas. However, many fields are represented in both research and applied psychology and researchers in psychology study a wide range of areas.
www.psychnet-uk.com/books/books_online.htm provides a list of links to psychological publications which may be accessed on-line through the internet, and it might be worth having a look at www-personal.umich.edu/~tmorris/goodbook.html for a more general list of reading material.

Books for Studying
If you are studying for a qualification then find out what texts are required by the examining board. These could include specific learning aids containing all the facts you need, but may also include some reference books and novels. If there is a book store on campus then they should stock most of the books you need. However when you're studying, a popular way to buy the books you need is to look out for older students selling on the books they no longer need. This will not only secure you a bargain, but also make sure you buy the right material, and put you in touch with other students who may be able to offer you advice on coursework or exams.

General literature and magazines
If you are no longer studying and a looking for material to satisfy your own general interests, then it is probably worth taking out a subscription to an academic journal or magazine that is published for your chosen subject. This will keep you up to date with new published material.

Buying New or Second Hand?
When investing in books it's worth considering buying them second hand. The larger reference type books can often be quite expensive and so you could save yourself some money by choosing a second hand option. Because the books will be cheaper this could mean you'll be able to make your money go further. Second hand books are also the obvious choice if the title you are looking for is out of print. The best way to go about tracking down an out of print book is to contact a specialist second hand book seller, as they will be more familiar with the most appropriate ways to search for the book you require.

Buying second hand is also the green option; it's far better to recycle. If someone has books they no longer need then it's a shame to have them go to waste, and it's much nicer for them to be passed on to give enjoyment and utility to someone else. However there are a few things to consider when buying second hand. Be aware that these are not new items so don't be disappointed if something has a 'worn-in' feel. Also read the advert carefully to make sure you know exactly what you are buying, and check the terms and conditions; these will probably be down to the individual seller. Don't be afraid of contacting them to ask about the item and make sure you feel comfortable with the price you are paying. Most people will want to get rid of the items they are advertising and should be willing to help; if they won't, then perhaps question their motives.
