A rabbit can make a great pet, especially if you have limited space for pets. Spend some time researching how to care for and meet the needs of your pet and you will be rewarded with a terrific addition to your family.

Where to Purchase Your Rabbit
The best place to buy a rabbit is from a private seller or a reputable breeder. The advantage to buying from a breeder is that the birth was planned carefully to produce good examples of the breed and healthy rabbits with good temperaments. A breeder will usually have handled the animals so that they are calm and friendly. At a breeders, you may also be able to observe the animals parents.

Rabbits may also be purchased from rescue shelters. Many animals are abandoned each year, so purchasing one from a rescue shelter will save an unwanted animal from euthanasia. At a rescue shelter, a vet will have checked the animals health and given them any medication or treatment needed. You may have to prove that you know how to care for the animal you choose and have a suitable environment for it.

If you purchase a rabbit from a pet shop, it may have come from a commercial breeder. This may mean that the animal may have been bred for quantity rather than quality. Such animals will not have been handled much and no information about the parents will be available. When buying from a shop, check that males and females are housed separately so that you do not acquire a pregnant female. Be sure the pet shop is clean and that the animals look healthy.

Checking Health
In general, they should have shiny coats, bright, clear eyes, and not seem weak or listless.

For Rabbits, look for:-
  • Sitting huddled at the back of the cage
  • Diarrhoea
  • Not eating or drinking
  • Eyes dull or discharge present
  • Nose dirty or discharge present
  • Sneezing
  • Teeth overgrown
  • Ears red or hot to the touch
Caring for a Rabbit

Be sure you know what to feed your rabbit and how to provide water for it. Take it to a vet for a checkup and any required vaccinations. House your pet where it will be safe from other animals and warm enough, but not too warm. Be sure to give your new rabbit some attention every day.

Conclusion

Rabbits make great pets, especially for owners who have limited space for pets. Learn about the requirements of your rabbit before you decide to purchase: as with any form of pet ownership, having a rabbit comes with its own set of responsibilities. classifieds.co.uk has a variety of rabbits for sale from both private sellers and reputable breeders.
