Encyclopaedias
An Encyclopaedia is a reference work that contains information on all branches of knowledge or treats comprehensively a specified branch of knowledge, usually in articles arranged in alphabetical order of subjects either in a single list or within each of several large subsections. The best-known and most extensive encyclopaedia, The Encyclopaedia Britannica, in book form, can cost up to 1500.

Since 1985, the Britannica has had four parts: the Micropdia, the Macropdia, the Propdia and a two-volume index. The Britannica's articles are found in the Micro- and Macropdia, which encompass respectively 12 and 17 volumes, each having roughly a thousand pages. The 2007 Macropdia has seven hundred in-depth articles, ranging in length from two to three hundred and ten pages, with references and named contributors. In contrast, the 2007 Micropdia has roughly 65,000 articles, the vast majority (about 97%) of which contain fewer than 750 words, no references and no named contributors. The Micropdia articles are intended for quick fact checking and to help find more thorough information in the Macropdia. The Macropdia articles are meant both as authoritative, well-written articles on their subjects and as storehouses of information not covered elsewhere. The longest article (310 pages) is on the United States, and resulted from the merger of the articles on the individual states. Information can be found in the Britannica by following the cross-references in the Micropdia and Macropdia; however, these are sparse, averaging one cross-reference per page. Hence, readers are recommended to consult the alphabetical index or the Propdia, which organises the Britannica's contents by topic. The core of the Propdia is its "Outline of Knowledge," which aims to provide a logical framework for all human knowledge. Accordingly, the Outline is consulted by the Britannica's editors to decide which articles should be included in the Micro- and Macropdia. The Outline is also intended to be a study guide, to put subjects in their proper perspective, and to suggest a series of Britannica articles for the student wishing to learn a topic in depth. However, libraries have found that it is rarely used, and reviewers have recommended it be dropped. The Propdia also has colour transparencies of human anatomy and several appendices listing the staff members, advisors and contributors to all three parts of the Britannica. Together, the Micropdia and Macropdia comprise roughly 40 million words and 24,000 images. The two-volume index has 2,350 pages, listing the 228,274 topics covered in the Britannica, together with 474,675 subentries under those topics. The Britannica generally prefers British spelling to American; for example, it uses colour (not color), centre (not center), and encyclopaedia (not encyclopedia). However, there are exceptions to this rule, such as defense rather than defence. Common alternative spellings are provided with cross-references such as "Color: see Colour."

The vast majority of the information contained within the Encyclopaedia, can now be obtained free, given some careful searching, from the Internet (of course, not withstanding subscription charges).

Dictionaries
A dictionary is a book, which gives the pronunciation and meaning of words. An unabridged dictionary is comprehensive in scope and gives more complete information. An abridged dictionary is narrow and provides less complete information.

Thesauri
A Thesaurus is an alphabetical list of terms showing synonyms and antonyms; or a set of controlled vocabulary used to indicate the subject matter of an item. An index term from a thesaurus is used as a subject point of access in computerized as well as print indexes.

Roget's Thesaurus is a widely-used English thesaurus, created by Dr. Peter Mark Roget (17791869) in 1805 and was released to the public on 29 April, 1852. The original edition had 15,000 words, and each new edition has been larger. The Karpeles Manuscript Library houses the original manuscript in its collection. The name "Roget" is not trademarked. Use of the name "Roget" in the title of a thesaurus does not necessarily indicate any relationship to Dr. Roget or the original Roget's Thesaurus. It has come to be seen as a generic thesaurus name, like "Webster" for dictionaries. Publishers have attempted to boost the sales of synonym dictionaries by labelling them with the words "Roget" and "Thesaurus".
Roget's Thesaurus is composed of six primary classes. Each class is composed of multiple divisions and then sections. This may be conceptualized as a tree containing over a thousand branches for individual "meaning clusters" or semantically linked words. These words are not exactly synonyms, but can be viewed as connotations of a meaning or as a spectrum of a concept. One of the most general words is chosen to typify the spectrum as its headword, which labels the whole group.

Most decent word-processing software provides an adequate dictionary and thesaurus, so the above are becoming rapidly outdated.

Text Books
Texts specifically designated for educational purposes were written in ancient Greece. The modern textbook has its roots in the standardisation made possible by the printing press. Johann Gutenberg himself may have printed editions of Ars Minor, a schoolbook on Latin grammar by Aelius Donatus. Early textbooks were used by tutors, teachers, who used the books as instructional aids (e.g. alphabet books) and individuals involved in autodidacticism. Compulsory education and the subsequent growth of schooling in Europe lead to the printing of many standardized texts for children. Textbooks have become the primary teaching instrument for most children since the 19th century. Once again, the content of most textbooks can be found on the Internet
