You may not be surprised to discover that buying and reading romance novels tends to be a hobby most enjoyed by the female half of the population -- and, if there are men out there who like a good bodice-ripper they tend to keep it to themselves! The fact is that romance novels are big business and this is one of the most popular genres in the book retailing sector with women of all ages. Some women like to simply collect and read these kinds of books for pleasure whilst other people actually formally collect them -- either generally or within specific sub-genres.

Popular types of romance novel
Part of the reason behind this genre's success is the fact that publishers now produce all kinds of romance novel to suit all tastes. This book sector used to be mainly populated by Mills and Boon books and variations on that theme but now there are all kinds of other options available into the bargain.

For example, many young girls start to like reading teenage romances even before they hit their teenage years. These books don't just handle the issue of love and relationships for teenage girls but can also be a useful way of addressing other problems and issues that they go through at the same time. And, of course Mills and Boon and similar types of books remain constantly popular. Some people like to read any kind of romance novel here whilst others will stick to a certain type -- i.e. they will only read Doctor/Nurse types of romance novel.

The historical romance sub-genre is also particularly popular. Lots of women like to spice up their romance reading with some history and there are all kinds of options here from Mills and Boon type romance novels through to large blockbusters and those so-called bodice rippers! In recent years a lot of younger women have started reading more contemporary romance novels (which are often described as 'chick-lit'). These may not conform to the standard stereotypes of the romance novel and may be a bit edgier and deal with other issues but -- a lot of the time -- the girl gets the boy and vice versa so they can be classified as a romance novel!

What to consider before buying romance novels
As with the purchase of any book cost is the first thing you will generally think about when buying romance novels. The book market is very competitive at the moment and book sellers -- both online and in the high street -- are having to cut their costs to attract customers. So, with a bit of research you should have no problems finding the romance novel you want to buy at a discounted cost.

Many people find that they can get the best prices by buying romance novels online as e-tailers can often charge less than bricks and mortar stores. Do bear in mind if taking this route you won't necessarily get the book immediately -- you'll have to wait for it to be delivered to you. And, the price you pay in delivery may negate any savings you made in the first place so do compare all costs before making a decision where to buy romance novels.

What to consider before buying romance novels second hand
If you are a serious collector of romance novels then the condition of the books you buy second hand is likely to be a serious issue for you. Most collectors want books in a very good condition if they are to make up part of a collection unless they are extremely rare copies where the condition and quality of the jacket and book itself becomes less of an issue to the future value of the book.

If you're simply reading romance novels for fun then you may not be too bothered about how the book looks. You may simply see a novel that catches your eye in a second hand book shop and decides that it look like a good read even if it is a bit tatty. In a store, if quality is important for you, then you can of course see the book for yourself but this 'handling' process isn't available online. So, what's the best way to approach a second hand online sale?

Firstly, ask the seller why they are selling -- if they have a genuine reason (unwanted gift, need to make room for more books at home, duplicate gift etc) for getting rid of the book then they will be less likely to lie about the condition of the book. Ask them if they can describe the book jacket and the book itself. Check that all the pages are there and that they are still bound into the book and ask if there is any damage or defect you need to know about.

Remember you can usually ask most sellers to show you a digital photo of the romance novel(s) before you make a purchase which will go some way to answering your questions on quality and condition.
