It is becomingly increasingly popular and affordable to have a sauna, hot tub or spa installed in your own home. They are a great way to relax and unwind after a hard days work and they are also a fun way in which to entertain friends. But, before you invest in sauna or spa there are some important points that you should consider:

Buying a spa or hot tub
  • Size is one of the most important considerations. Decide what size of spa you would like. Do you plan to use it just for your own use, in which case a small 2 to 4 seater spa will be sufficient or do you plan to use it to entertain friends and family, in which case, you will need a much bigger unit. However, remember that and size is linked to space available and price as, generally, the bigger the spa, the more it will cost.
  • Decide where you plan to install the spa. Make sure that you choose an appropriate size of spa to fit your available space. Think about privacy as well as easy access to electricity and water supply and check if there are any height restrictions or tight corners that may make it difficult to get the spa into the space you have identified for it. If you are unsure as to whether or not the space you have identified is suitable for a spa then consult a reputable company specialising in the supply and installation of spas as they will be able to advise you.
  • Remember that spas and hot tubs need to be installed on a base which must be strong enough to support the spa and also slightly bigger than the spa. Usually, a concrete base is required which must be roughly 4 to 6 inches thick, depending of the size of spa. If you plan to install the spa on a deck then this will need to reinforced to support the spa.
  • All spas and hot tubs require an electrical supply but, as the combination of water and electricity can be potentially lethal, it is vital (and a legal requirement in the UK) that you employ a fully qualified electrician to make sure that the appropriate connections are made to the required safety standards.
  • Spas and hot tubs also require a water supply. Check what type of water supply is required usually free-standing hot tubs can be filled with a hose pipe. Most hot tubs and spas have a valve for draining the water away via a hose.
  • Find out if the spa supply company that you choose will deliver and install the spa otherwise you may come home someday to find a spa sitting in the middle of your driveway and you will then have to find some way to get it to where you want it to be installed!
  • Check how often the water needs to be changed and what maintenance is required to keep the water clean.
  • Other points to consider when buying a spa include whether you want a lounger or non-lounger style spa, how many pumps, size of pumps, the number of jets and the number and position of grab rails to help make moving about the spa easier. Spas and hot tubs may even be available with underwater lights, a radio or MP3 facility.
  • Remember at all times to keep children and pets well away from the spa for safety reasons. A cover which can be locked is a good idea for when the spa is not in use.
Buying a sauna
  • If you have never used a sauna before, try one at your local health club. You will probably enjoy the experience -- but you may absolutely hate it - some people do!
  • Saunas can be installed inside or outside your home so decide where your ideal location is and then check it with a reputable local supplier of saunas.
  • Saunas can be bought as a factory finished kit or they can be custom-made to suit your specific requirements and space.
  • The size of the sauna cabin varies so think about how many people will be using your sauna and then choose an appropriate size. Remember that it is not necessary to have enough space for everyone to lie down inside the sauna, just as long as there is enough space for people to sit comfortably.
  • Sauna cabins may have wood panelling inside and outside and different types of wood are available. Also, doors can be double glazed and windows can be inserted in the cabin if required.
  • Check that the temperature of the sauna can be regulated generally saunas operate around 70 to 100 degrees and the operating temperature is largely dictated by personal preference.
  • Compare prices and products between a few different sauna suppliers to make sure that you receive a good, high-quality service from a reputable company and that you also get value for money. Check that the firm will deliver and install the sauna and that these services are included in the price.
  • Choose a fully-qualified and experienced electrician to connect the sauna stove (if you are opting for an electric model) to make sure that the work is done to the required safety standards. This is a legal requirement in the UK -- as is the use of a CORGI registered gas installer if you opt for a model which requires a gas supply.
Buying saunas and spas second hand
If you are considering buying second hand then be sure that the spa or sauna is fully functioning and is supplied complete as you may have difficulty getting extra parts to fix older models. Also, make sure that the spa or sauna meets current safety standards. Think about how you are going to get it to your home and determine whether it will be necessary to get a professional to fit it.

When buying a sauna or spa for home use it is advisable to do your homework thoroughly to ensure that you are dealing with a reputable supplier. Installation is best left in the hands of the professionals and be sure that you have correctly specified it. That way, your spa or sauna will be something enjoyable and fun to relax in instead of an expensive, seldom-used white elephant.
