Buying self help and instructional books and magazines can cover a wider range of material, from an instructional book such as a DIY manual or something more unusual like a self help guide when you're feeling low. There is so much out there it's worth taking a few moments to think about what you're looking for and where the best place will be to find it.

Depending on what you're looking for, buying such books can either be a daunting task or really quite straight forward. Those books that are found in the 'self help' section are usually those addressing personal problems, while the 'instructional' books can cover anything from DIY books and even cookery books if you think about it!

If you have decided you need some reading matter for your soul then the self help section of the book store can seem a bit daunting. Being faced with rows and rows of books, all claiming to have the perfect solution to your problems can make you feel even worse! In these situations, it's worth doing a bit of research before you decide to purchase; maybe see if any of your friends who have had similar problems can recommend anything. Also try and have a look on the internet first as it should be easier to search through online stores to find the right book for you.

For more general reading then try looking for a magazine. There are now a few glossy magazines focusing on well being for the mind as well as the body � this could be a bit less intense than reading a book so might be a good option if you just want something a bit more meaningful to read but not as in depth or time consuming as a book.

Buying Instructional books
It can be useful to have a few instructional books around the home to turn to for a bit of help. A book of basic DIY and a book of basic first aid would be an excellent addition to any house hold. You might also like to consider a general gardening book if you have some outside space, that way you can make sure all you expensive plants can live long and prosper and it might even give you the confidence to try something new. It can also be useful to buy a manual for your car (if you own one) just to help you keep it in good shape and maybe even save you an expensive trip to the garage. Instructional books can also be a bit of fun and sometimes can even be given as gifts. You could give your friend a book associated with their favourite hobby such as the '100 greatest golf tips'.

Buying New or Second Hand?
When investing in books it's worth considering buying them second hand. The larger reference type books can often be quite expensive and so you could save yourself some money by choosing a second hand option. Because the books will be cheaper this could mean you'll be able to make your money go further. Second hand books are also the obvious choice if the title you are looking for is out of print. The best way to go about tracking down an out of print book is to contact a specialist second hand book seller, as they will be more familiar with the most appropriate ways to search for the book you require.

Buying second hand is also the green option; it's far better to recycle. If someone has books they no longer need then it's a shame to have them go to waste, and it's much nicer for them to be passed on to give enjoyment and utility to someone else. However there are a few things to consider when buying second hand. Be aware that these are not new items so don't be disappointed if something has a 'worn-in' feel. Also read the advert carefully to make sure you know exactly what you are buying, and check the terms and conditions; these will probably be down to the individual seller. Don't be afraid of contacting them to ask about the item and make sure you feel comfortable with the price you are paying. Most people will want to get rid of the items they are advertising and should be willing to help; if they won't, then perhaps question their motives.
