Skips come in all shapes and sizes; from small skip bags to mini skips through to large industrial sized skips that can hold loads of stuff. So, more and more people are using skips when they need to dispose of rubbish. They may be clearing out the garden and the shed, gutting and renovating a property or simply having a major clear out. In all cases hiring a skip can be a good way of getting rid of your rubbish quickly and effectively. But, how do you choose the right skip hire company in the first place?

How to Find a Skip Hire Company
Most of us don't need to hire skips all that often, so this may be the first time you've had to find a skip hire company. If you know someone who has used this kind of service before then you can always ask them for a recommendation. If they were happy with the company they used, then there is no reason why you shouldn't be happy with them either.

If this isn't an option for you, then your best bet is to use a directory such as Yellow Pages or to go online to find a skip hire company local to you. However, once you've found a list of potential companies that you could use, how do you choose the right one for you?

How to Choose the Right Skip Hire Company
When you start to look at skip hire companies and draw up a shortlist, don't simply think that cost is the only issue that you need to consider. Whilst you do of course, want to keep costs as low as possible, you also want to make sure that the skip hire company you use will give you the right levels of service. Make sure that they can give you advice on the right skip for your needs (and supply it!) and that they do what they are supposed to from a legal point of view.

Firstly you need to check that you are using a reputable skip hire company. All skip hire operators should be registered as a waste management operator with the Environment Agency, with a number to prove their registration. If you are looking to have a skip sited on a road (rather than in your drive way, for example), then the skip hire company may need to have (or apply for) a permit, so check with them to see what the regulations are for your area.

It's also worth asking what the skip hire company does with the waste you get rid of when they take it away. A 'Del Boy' outfit that simply fly tips waste may not seem to be your concern as long as you get rid of your rubbish, but you could actually be held liable to prosecution if they do this or use any other kind of illegal means to dispose of waste.

Costs, delivery and pick up are obviously other major considerations. You want a skip hire company that will drop off a skip when you need it and that will pick it up when you don't! Get at least three quotes before you choose a skip hire company to use.

How to Use a Skip Properly
There are certain things you need to remember when using a skip. It is wise, for a start, to get the right size of skip (the company may be able to give you guidance here), and the recommendation is often to get more space than you think you'll need. There's nothing worse than hiring a skip that is too small! If you are worried about your neighbours trying to sneak their stuff into the skip, then look for one with a lid or closed top that you can control. This may not seem a big deal but you are not allowed to overfill skips!

You also need to think about where your skip will go; it shouldn't, for example, go on the pavement or obstruct access for your neighbours. You may be able to use a grass verge outside your home but check if this is your grass verge. If it isn't then you may need a permit (in the same way as if you were putting the skip on the road).

Finally, think about the kind of stuff you'll want to get rid of in the skip. Some items are not allowed to be disposed of by skip, including tyres, fridges and freezers, TVs and liquids. Check with the skip hire company to see what you cannot put in the skip if you think this will be an issue. They may offer a different kind of service to dispose of these kinds of items, or may be able to put you in touch with somebody else who can get rid of them. And, spare a thought for people walking past the skip and make sure that sharp or dangerous items don't stick out and cause an accident.
