Buying sports equipment nowadays can be bewildering. There hardly seems to be a sport out there that doesn't come with all kinds of equipment choices and options! A lot of time your shopping may well be partly based on cost (in that you want to get the sports equipment you need at the lowest possible cost!). So, what's the best way to buy sports equipment?

Types of sports equipment
Visit any sports shop and look around for the sport in which you are interested, and you'll see a whole load of equipment that you could potentially buy. If you play football, for example, you might think that all you need is a ball and a pair of boots but you'd be wrong! Even a regular sized sports shop will show you a whole host of options from football goals, to training cones, to corner flags, to training aids..you can even buy referee stuff if you like!

So, the first thing you need to know before you buy sports equipment is what you want to buy. Bear in mind with most sports that there will be some essential purchases that you will need to get going, and a load of 'nice to haves' which you don't have to buy straight away!

Where to buy new sports equipment
Sports stores and some bigger department stores with a sports department are often good places to start when you are looking for sports equipment. Even if you don't plan to buy in the high street because you'll ultimately order online, you can always check out high street shops first before you place an Internet order.

This can actually be very important with certain types of sports equipment. For example, if you are buying a racquet then you need to know how it feels when you hold it to make sure you will get the most out of it.

Shopping online for sports equipment can make it a lot easier to find the equipment you need it and you can save a lot of money if you are lucky (and do your price comparison research!). Many online sports retailers will give discounts for online shopping but do make sure that you don't waste these discounts by using sites with high postage/delivery costs that actually make the online purchase more expensive than buying in the high street.

Where to buy second hand sports equipment
You can find second hand sports equipment in various ways. Local papers are often a good source so check out the classified ads section to see if anyone is selling the equipment that you need. Word of mouth may also help you out here; if you tell friends that you are looking for a particular type of equipment then they may well know of someone who has stuff to sell.

And, of course the world of the Internet is also available to you.You can find just about anything you want in sports equipment second hand online. Some people like to use auction sites such as eBay, and others like to use online classified ad sites to try and find individuals with the right equipment to sell when they need it immediately. Either way you should be looking to get the sports equipment you want at a lower cost than if you bought it new.

Things to think about before you buy sports equipment second hand online
Do bear in mind that you won't actually be able to see the sports equipment that you want to buy when you buy over the Internet on a second hand basis. So, you may have to find other ways to check quality and condition.

Quality and condition will be more important with some kinds of purchases than with others. If you plan to save some money on a state of the art tennis racquet, for example, by buying one second hand then you won't get any value for money if it falls apart in your first match and you later find out that the previous owner sold it because he'd tried to wrap it around a tree when he lost! But, if you are just looking for a racquet for the kids to knock a ball around with then quality and condition may not be so important to you.

Do ask to see digital photos of any second hand sports equipment that you plan to buy online; most sellers will provide these as a matter of course. Ask them why they are selling the equipment and what condition it is in. Ask them if it has ever been damaged and/or repaired. Also, ask them why they are selling it; a good reason here could be an indication of good condition. For example, if a seller is selling a squash racquet because they never get round to using it then it is probably in excellent condition. If he/she is selling the racquet because they need a new one then it may well be on its last legs!

Last of all do check how much it will cost for the seller to post/deliver the sports equipment you buy. You don't want to pay over the odds but do remember that large and bulky items could cost a lot to have them delivered.
