Storage furniture can come in all shapes and sizes, from wardrobes and drawers in the bedroom to kitchen cabinets and free standing cupboards for other areas of the home. You can even buy storage boxes for your garden equipment and outdoor furniture if you want. The price you pay for storage furniture depends to a large extent on the quality of the materials used to make it and of course what it is you're actually buying.

Similarly there are numerous options for display furniture available which again range from a few pounds to hundreds or even thousands if you have items custom made. A great way to get a quality product for a reasonable price is to search around for second hand furniture or visit showrooms where they sell seconds furniture which is imperfect and can't be sold for the original price. Below are a few things to look out for when buying second hand or imperfect furniture.

Bedroom furniture
Wardrobes and drawers are often sold in a used condition so it is important to ask about any damage they might have before buying. Check the bottoms of the drawers are all intact as well because some mass production manufacturers only use plywood or hardboard which can easily split over time. Another thing to consider is the size of the furniture. Measure your house carefully and make sure that large items will go up the stairs and through doorways! If they don't then check that the items can be disassembled and moved in sections.

If you don't mind a few scratches and dents then you can often get second hand solid wood items for the same price as brand new mass production furniture. This can give any room an impressive look that visitors will think cost you a small fortune.

Kitchen furniture
It may not have occurred to you that you can often buy second hand kitchen cabinets for much lower prices than new. Many people who buy a new house refit the entire kitchen within months of moving in, simply because they don't like the style of the cabinets that are already there. If the owners take the time to remove the cabinets carefully then they can be sold as used and you can pick up a real bargain.

It is important to check the width sizes of the cabinets carefully to ensure that they fit your kitchen without any gaps. You should also check the height of the cabinets as they don't necessarily come in a standard size and it might be that they interfere with existing pipework in your kitchen or that you have to retile the backsplash areas because of a gap. Most second hand kitchens will have a few bumps and scratches however this is a small price to pay for a quality kitchen that may save you hundreds of pounds.

Garden storage
Garden storage boxes can be bought made of firm plastic or sheet metal if you want something stronger. People often buy a storage box to house the equipment they currently have, only to find that over time they need a bigger version. If you are thinking of buying garden storage second hand then you need to make sure you can transport it from the seller's house to yours or that it comes apart into sections. You should also check the doors lock and that there aren't any cracks or holes that could cause rain to leak in.

Display furniture
There are numerous items that could fall into the category of display furniture including TV stands, coffee tables, bookcases and wall shelving and, of course, free standing glass display cabinets. The type of display furniture you buy will depend on what it is you want to show off and how fragile it might be. For collectible china or pottery, trophies and other valuable items, you will probably want to have them locked up behind glass -- particularly if you have children!

If you are thinking of buying second hand display furniture you should check its overall appearance first and make sure it will hold whatever it is you want it to hold. Solid wood furniture such as bookcases and cabinets also need to be checked for woodworm and if they are varnished or lacquered then they should be relatively free from scratches and other marks. Some laminated wood items tend to peel over time so you need to make sure all the laminate is securely glued down.

The glass of display cabinets should not be scratched or marked in any way whilst also being free from chips and cracks. If the glass is coloured then this should be in good condition and not flaking and any leaded areas should be free from signs of tarnishing. If you have children, infirm or elderly relatives living with you, do make sure that glass adheres to modern safety standards -- you may need to replace the glass in older furniture for this reason. Mirrors also need to be in good condition and locks on the doors need to have their keys present.

Your storage and display furniture tastes and needs will probably change more than once over the years. This means that if you buy brand new items each time you will probably spend a small fortune furnishing your house. Buying these items second hand can save you a lot of money in the long run and you might even be able to get top quality furniture for the same price as lower quality new items. The only downside is that you may have to wait a while for the perfect piece to come along.
