Remaining in the same place for any time means accruing large quantities of "junk." This might be things that are actually needed, but more often, just thing that are wanted. For example, an old car or motorbike, or an antique awaiting restoration. Self-storage allows for less clutter and more organisation. There are a number of points to bear in mind when seeking storage:
1. Check out the locality (the Internet is convenient) to find out what storage sites are available.
2. The storage rental business is very competitive. As a result, there are many good incentives. These include free locks, free rent for up to three months and even free transport. It may be possible to obtain all three as a "carrot" for signing up.
3. Storage can be expensive, so ensure it will only house essential items. If an item hasn't been touched for, say, two years, it is a candidate for disposal.
4. Organisation is the key to getting the most out of a self-storage unit. Standard units are generally 10' square or 10' by 20'. It is sensible to pack the most valuable, precious items at the back, so if anyone manages to gain access, the most expensive items are safer. Ensure items are bagged or boxed safely, to protect from dust.
5. Security is a major consideration. Most storage facilities do not provide insurance necessary to protect contents. However, they usually have an outside source that can provide the necessary insurance to protect contents. The locks used by rental facilities are generally more than adequate and competitively priced.
Portable Storage Containers
If you are managing to fill even a self-storage facility, portable storage containers can provide immediate additional space. Durable and waterproof, storage containers can be used year-round in any type of weather without fear of rust or leaks. They are cheaper than new construction, and can be delivered promptly. Portable storage containers come in a variety of sizes. Most are usually 8' wide and 8'6" high, and commonly feature lengths of 20' and 40 feet', equating to volumes of 1,170 cubic feet and 3,340 cubic feet. 20' units provide easier access to items in the back. 40' models provide almost three times as much space, but will require back / side doors for access.
Portable Container Design
Storage containers are constructed with 14-gauge corrugated steel sides, doors and roofs. The floors are generally made from marine-grade plywood that is just over one inch thick and can withstand 16,000 pounds of pressure per 100 square feet. Manufacturers weld the containers together using elastic sealing compound to ensure they are air and watertight. Most models are both weather resistant and fireproof. Swing-out doors at either end of the container feature galvanized interior locking bars, similar to bank vaults.
Choosing a Storage Container Vendor
The industry comprises companies of various sizes that resell units from wholesalers, leasing companies and industry associations. While the size of company doesn't matter, there are certain attributes to look for before making a purchase. The most important point to consider is proximity. Delivery charges are based on distance, and are one of the most competitive aspects of the industry. Therefore, it's beneficial to find vendors close to your location. If possible, select one within 25 to 75 miles, as, beyond that, pricing can become prohibitive. Working with a local vendor also offers a great opportunity to check out the vendor's products in person. Additionally, the vendor should be knowledgeable about the industry. As with any business, if they've been in business for a long time, it's usually a sign that they know how to keep customers happy.
Pricing
Having decided on a portable storage container, there are three options available:
1. Purchase :
If the container is for long-term use, buying is usually the best option. Depreciation is slow, so resale is viable.
2. Rent :
The most affordable option for the short-term. Renting may tax-deductible depending upon your business, but can get expensive if the unit is kept for longer than expected.
3. Lease to own :
A good choice for a long-term container, when cash is not available up-front. It allows the spreading of costs over a period and the purchase of the container with a final nominal payment. However, interest means paying considerably more than the purchase price.
New Containers
A basic 20' storage container varies from £500 to £2000 plus. Multiple purchases usually attract discounts on price and transport charges. Despite having almost three times as much storage space, 40' storage containers aren't much more expensive than 20' models. 40' range from about £700 to £2700.
Used Containers
Pricing is more palatable for used storage containers. Vendors buy used units, replace any broken parts, ensure they're watertight and apply a fresh coat of paint. The containers look as good as new, cost about 30% to 50% less than a new one. Expect to pay anywhere from £400 to £1500 for a used container. Lower end units might include "as seen" containers with few add-ons and no guarantees against water or fire damage. At the high end, the containers are fully reconditioned and feature all the functionality of a brand new model.
Rentals
The average lease runs for 18-24 months. Monthly payments at the time of range from £40 to £75 depending on the condition and age of the container. When leasing, many vendors offer lower monthly rates for longer lease periods. Short-term rentals cost around £2 to £4 per day, with no specific term.
