For anyone seeking to purchase a pool or hot tub, the best advice is to purchase from a specialist supplier of good repute. A well established supplier will also be more likely to still be in business if you need to claim on any warranty, whereas some suppliers will have ceased trading, leaving you with a worthless warranty. Pools and hot tubs are costly domestic acquisitions. Unfortunately this has seen the rise of many "cowboys" seeking to supply cheap, inferior products at exaggerated prices in order to make a quick profit.

In order to avoid being "stitched up," there are a number of measures that can be taken:

1. Determine the length of time a supplier has been in the trade.
2. Ascertain membership of trade / professional organisations.
3. Follow up references and testimonials, checking that customers are genuinely satisfied with the service they have received.

POOLS
There are several different pool styles, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

"Above ground" pools
These are the cheapest type and easiest to build. The majority come as prefabricated kits. They could be constructed by a proficient amateur, though it is wise to rely on professional installers. A perimeter track supports the pool wall, usually made of metal or plastic. This type of pool is not as attractive as other types and less durable.
However, if the pool needs to be relocated for any reason, it is a straightforward process to dismantle it.

Fibreglass pools
These are made from fibreglass-reinforced plastic, moulded into a basin shape and generally surrounded by a concrete deck.

Vinyl-lined pools
Structurally similar to above-ground pools, but with the appearance of a conventional in-ground pool. Much less expensive than other in-ground pools, but lack durability, liner requiring replacement every seven to ten years.

Poured concrete pools
Concrete is poured into conventional wooden forms. In masonry block pools, the walls are constructed with concrete blocks.

It should be noted that any "in-ground" pool, while appearing to be an immovable object, could float in surrounding ground water. An empty pool can be pushed damaged by ground water pressure. To prevent this, the pressure inside and outside the pool needs to be equal. Modern pools have a hydrostatic valve to guard against damage from ground water pressure. If ground water pressure is great enough, it opens the valve allowing ground water to flows in and equalise the pressure.

HOT TUBS
Hot tubs come in all shapes and sizes. It is essential, when contemplating the purchase of a hot tub, that you try it out for comfort and size. "Wet testing" of a tub will also bring to light issues such as depth, particularly important in you are very tall / short or children will be using the tub. Ensure that the model of tub is appropriate to the location and climate. The appropriate size of tub will depend on its intended use. A specialist, professional dealer should be able to point you in the right direction, so be certain to discuss your requirements thoroughly. Salespeople will use by high pressure selling techniques, encouraging you to make an immediate decision. Do not be rushed!
Read as much technical information as possible. List desirable and undesirable features.
This will prevent you being overwhelmed by technical terminology. Ascertain whether the installer buys complete tubs from reputable makers. If they only purchase components and construct the tubs themselves, there is plenty of scope for the inclusion of cheap, inferior quality components. Similarly, there is no guarantee as to the quality of workmanship in the finished product.

Warranties
Often, individual guarantees are available for the hot tub shell, its surface, pipework etc.
Warranties can be complex, with many exclusions. Be certain that you are aware on any ongoing maintenance that is required to maintain the validity of any warranty. Keep details to support any future claim. Ensure that any faulty components will not have to be returned to the manufacturer and that an engineer will come to you to resolve any problems.

Installation
Make sure that the installation of the tub and the cost thereof is clear with both you and the supplier. Be certain that they are going to prepare the site and that the installers are appropriately qualified for the work involved. This is particularly important with regard to any electrical work as water and electricity do not mix! One important point that is often overlooked is access for the delivery vehicle.

Running Costs
Be certain that you are aware of, and happy with ongoing running costs, such electricity, chemicals, filters and service costs, as well as the initial costs (purchase, site preparation, delivery and installation)
