Tilers are useful for many jobs around the house. You may, for example, need someone who can tile your bathroom, lay a new tiled kitchen floor or even tile your swimming pool! Although tiling doesn't seem like such a tough job it can be tricky and time consuming, and most importantly, it can easily go wrong in the wrong hands! So to get your tiling job right, you may be better off using a tiler with skill and experience.

How to Find a Tiler
Most tilers can turn their hands to most general tiling jobs, however in some cases you may need to use a tiler that has specific expertise to get a special job done right. The easiest (and often best) way to find a reputable and effective tiler is to ask family, friends and neighbours for recommendations. Tilers they recommend will have proved their worth during a job, which gives some peace of mind when hiring someone.

If you don't know anyone who has had tiling work done recently then you will find lists of local tilers in directories such as Yellow Pages. There are also a lot of online trades-people directories which may be useful. However, finding a tiler from a directory doesn't reveal much information about the skills and expertise of the tiler, so you may need to call up a few companies to find out more about them and compare quotes.

How to Choose a Reliable Tiler
Unlike many trade and craft specialists, tilers don't have to have any specific qualifications to do their job. Many work for a more experienced tiler or for a related construction company for a number of years, in either a formal or informal apprenticeship, where they learn 'on the job'. Some may have done some tiling courses at college in which case they may hold a CITB award in tiling, although again this isn't compulsory for tilers. This will change in a few years when the government plans to introduce a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) which will make it easier for consumers to judge a tiler's skills and experience.

Until then, you will have to rely on your own judgement if you are choosing a tiler without recommendation. One of the key things to ask any tiler is how long they have been in business/working as a tiler and what sort of jobs they do best. Check to see if they can do the job you need them to do and whether they have done similar jobs before, then ask them how much the job will cost.

Don't just talk to one tiler, talk to a few to see who comes across best and who has the quote you can best live with. Do bear in mind that the cheapest cost may not be the option you want to take up; you want a good job done so that the tiling lasts, so you may have to pay a little more to get a good quality of service. It's always a good idea to get tilers to come and look at the tiling job before they give you a quote, as this allows them to measure up accurately for simple jobs, and to iron out any issues for more complicated projects. If you plan on using special tiles or need customised designs put in place, then check that the tiler has worked on these kinds of projects in the past and is comfortable doing so again.

Any reputable tiler should be happy to give you some references that you can check out from previous customers. Do check the references and, if possible, ask to see the work that was done in person. When you talk to the previous customer who is giving the reference ask them if they were happy with the tiler and the work he/she did. Ask if they did the job on time and on budget, and if they had any problems or issues with the service they received. Most importantly, ask if they would use the tiler again; if they say no (even if they cannot explain why), then you may not want to use the tiler yourself.

Before you choose a tiler from your shortlist make sure to check with each candidate to see how long the job will take (and when they can start), and how much it will cost. Remember to get quotes in writing before you agree to anything at this stage. Also, remember that some tilers will expect you to provide all of the necessary tiles, adhesive and grout, so check if this is the case or whether they will buy some or all of the materials for you. Even if they supply all materials, in the majority of cases you will still be expected to pay for all materials as well as the labour costs. Finally, check that the tiler will guarantee his/her work and that they have adequate levels of insurance in place.
