Children of all ages, love to play. Playing is the way in which children learn, develop physically, and expand their social skills. Play has often been called �a child�s work.� If that is so, then toys are tools that children use when they work. Age appropriate toys, chosen based on sensible criteria, help children to grow and learn. Here are some criteria to use in choosing toys for children and some suggestions for purchasing toys for various age groups.

Criteria for Choosing Toys for Children
Young children, ages 0-3, are curious about the world around them. One way in which they explore the world is by putting things in their mouths! Parents and relatives have to be very careful to make sure that toys do not have small parts that can choke children. These may include small balls, stuffed animal and doll eyes, balloons, screws, small plastic parts, coins, batteries, and so forth. Even children aged 4 and 5 should be reminded not to put objects into their mouths.

All toys should be chosen for their appropriateness to the age of the child, be safe and well-built, and durable. No toy should ever have lead paint or contain liquids that might be ingested. Toys should not have sharp edges or points. In addition, appropriate toys should be interesting to the child, match his or her physical capabilities, and be well-suited to the child�s mental and social development.

Most toys have appropriate age ranges for use listed on the packaging.

Toys for 0-2 Year Olds
Toys appropriate for ages one month to two years include: rattles, stuffed animals, chew rings, soft, large balls, blocks, crib toys, crib mobiles, pop-up devices, large plastic cars and trucks, buckets and spades, jumper swings, rolling chairs, lullaby CDs, and teething rings.

Toys for 3-5 Year Olds
Toys for children ages 3 to 5 include: blocks, stuffed toys, large dolls and strollers, miniature kitchen furniture, bouncing balls, tricycles, cars and trucks, wooden puzzles with 3 to 15 pieces, stacking rings (graduated), board games such as Snakes and Ladders, colour games, matching games, large magnetic letters and numbers, alphabet and number puzzles, crayons and paints, sand toys, a water table and toys, cardboard books, nursery rhyme and fairy tale books, other children�s books, talking stuffed animals, children�s music CDs, and modelling clay.

Toys for 6-8 Year Olds
Six to eight year olds enjoy: books, tape or CD players and CDs with stories and music, blocks, puzzles (up to 100 pieces), board games such as checkers, Snakes and Ladders, Bingo, etc., number puzzles to 100, word and picture matching gamesfootballs, bouncing balls, basketballs, plastic bats, roller and ice skates, two wheel bicycles, scooters, electronic book readers, simple electronic games, a large key calculator, dolls (especially Barbie, Action Man or film characters) and their clothes / accessories, computer learning games such as Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, modelling clay, crayons, paints, art supplies (felt pens, paper, children�s craft items, glue, scissors, glitter, coloured chalk, etc.), children�s movies, stuffed toys, cars and trucks, skipping ropes, play money, and roller skaes or skateboard (to be used with close supervision).

Toys for 9-11 Year Olds
Older children, ages 9-11, prefer: books, tape or DVD players for stories and music, puzzles (up to 1,000 pieces), board games such as checkers, Monopoly, chess, etc., footballs and football kit, bouncing balls, basketballs and a basket, tennis balls, plastic bats, roller and ice skates, two wheel bicycles, scooters, electronic games, electronic / radio controled cars, computer learning games such as Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, paints, art supplies (felt pens, coloured pencils, paper, children�s craft items, glue, scissors, glitter, stamps, etc.), children�s movies, a skateboard, sports or other collectible cards, children�s magazines, skipping ropes, jewellery crafts, crossword puzzles, country and world maps or a globe, multiplication flash cards, a calculator, insect observation containers, a magnifying glass, a telescope, a microscope, science project kits, kites, children�s cook books, a trampoline, football goals / nets, marbles and marble runs.

Conclusion
Toys are the tools children use to learn, socialise and grow. Every child is different and the individual nature of each child must therefore be taken into account when making a purchase. Age appropriateness is also essential: aside from the inherent safety issues in giving a toddler toys with small parts that can so easily choke them, there is nothing more disheartening for a child than a gift which is either 'too baby-ish' or frustratingly difficult, The above provides some guidelines as to common, appropriate toys for given age groups but there is no substitute for asking the child's parents!
