Where and How To Find a Trades and Manual Labour Job

Job Centres
Every major town and city in the UK has a Job Centre which aims to provide help and support to any job-seeker. They will have a listing of trades and manual jobs available in your area. You can either drop in to view the vacancies on offer on a regular basis or you can register online and start your search via the web. Their website is Job Centre Plus. The Job Centre has qualified consultants who will help you apply for jobs and answer any questions you may have regarding training, salaries and even give you tips on interview techniques.

Recruitment or Job Agencies
Similar to a Job Centre, a recruitment or job agency will also carry a list of advertised vacancies. However, there are specialist recruitment agencies which only manage jobs in the trades and manual labour market. Their job is to match your skills to an employer who has a position or positions to fill. Most Recruitment Agencies have offices where you can make an appointment to meet with a consultant to discuss your job needs. Alternatively, you can use the many online recruitment services available. All you will need to do is register your details or CV and the agency will contact you with any suitable vacancies. Some recruitment agencies deal only with part-time or temporary jobs. Others only manage certain industries -- for example, catering or office services. Therefore, it is important to register with one that will suit your needs. If you are an overseas worker, some recruitment agencies can help you obtain working visas, apply for national security numbers, handle tax claims as well as set up banking accounts.

Classifieds
In addition to the ads here at Classifieds, many local news papers and directories, both online and offline, feature a classifieds section. It is worth going through these sections on a weekly basis as many jobs in the trades and manual labour markets tend to advertise in these publications. If you see a job you are interested in, there will normally be a telephone number which you can use to contact the employer directly. Another place where you may be able to find job advertisements is on public notice boards such as the newsagents, the public library or other public spaces. This can be a straightforward, no-fuss way to secure a job.

Word of Mouth
Many trades and manual jobs tend to be on a casual or temporary basis. Ask your friends and family if they know of any positions available. If there are no current jobs, ask them to keep your details in mind and contact you should they know or hear of a possible job opportunity.

Hazards that you might come across while engaged in manual work
It is well-known that many manual jobs can be dangerous due to the physical work involved. Here is a list of the most common hazards, how you can reduce your risk of injury at work and what your employer's responsibilities are.
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) -- include problems like lower back pain, joint injuries and repetitive strain injuries.
  • Slips and trips
  • Falls from a height
  • Vibration
  • Noise
Your Employer's Responsibilities
Your employer has a legal duty to assess all of these hazards in a risk assessment. As well as telling you about them, they must supply information, training and suitable protective measures to reduce the risks linked to the hazards. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations say your employer must:
  • assess any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided
  • avoid hazardous manual handling operations if possible
  • reduce the risk of injury by providing alternative methods of carrying out the task

National Minimum Wage
Many workers in the trades and manual labour market are paid a salary close to the National Minimum Wage. To protect yourself and to ensure you are receiving a fair salary, it is important to keep yourself updated on the regulations surrounding the national wage.

At the time of writing, adult workers are entitled to the national minimum wage if they are:-
1) Working legally in the UK
2) Not genuinely self-employed
3) Have a written, oral or implied contract

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates as of 1st October 2007 are:
5.52 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older
A development rate of 4.60 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
3.40 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age.

If you have a complaint about the non-payment of the minimum wage, it is advisable to call the National Minimum Wage Helpline. The contact details can be found on the HM Customs and Revenue website on www.hmrc.gov.uk.
