There are many well known travel agents that offer all types of packages for their clients. These include firms with widespread representation on the high street and also online. There are also specialist companies that offer deals concentrated in one part of the world and agents associated with a particular airline who have a specific deal with that company. Agents will offer telephone appointments, online applications and searches and, where they have a high street presence, face to face appointments to find the right holiday for you.

Planning your Holiday
Before consulting a travel agent you need to decide where it is you want to go, with whom and what budget you have between you. You also need to think about what kind of packages you may wish to purchase. You could just get return tickets or pay up front for a hotel, tours, transport and activities which means you would only need spending money for the trip itself. You also need to think about when you can go, whether you need to book time off work and whether you want or are able to go at off peak times and save significant sums. Many of these factors will be dictated by your own work and parental circumstances. You can also think about how you would like to travel -- by boat, train, coach or aeroplane and how travelling time might impact on your holiday. You should also think about the purpose of your holiday. Is it a family holiday for all to enjoy, a holiday to get away, relax and soak up some sun or a high energy holiday with sports or entertainment. Once you have a clear idea as to the type of holiday you all want and have a budget in mind and a rough idea of the time when you want to go away then you area ready to engage with one or more travel agents to get the best range of options and deals.

How a Travel Agent can Help
Most travel agents can help you with a number of questions and queries as they have a great deal of information readily available and are experienced in putting together a holiday package.

First of all a travel agent will check your holiday destination and tell you if and how you might need to prepare. They will be able to let you know if you need jabs for travelling in certain countries and should have information on any concerns regarding the local political climate. They will also be able to tell you about current prices on flights and check a number of airlines for the best prices within the time frame for your holiday. Some will have package deals on holidays to that particular destination or if you are flexible, they will also be able to tell you about current and future deals. They will be able to advise on transport when you get there, hotels in the area or offer apartments with self-catering. They can also organise travel insurance and other protection on your holiday. Do check with regard to cancellation rights and time scales as these vary widely. Most will allow cancellation but the amount refundable will decrease, the closer you get to your scheduled departure date.

Holiday Deals
Many travel agents will be able to offer deals on holidays such as last minute deals and package holidays. These are often arranged when agents have deals with specific hotels or airlines and get discounted prices. Some smaller firms have deals with a particular resort where they offer package deals within a specific area as a result of dealing directly with local hoteliers and so on, cutting out the middle man. These are very specific however and if you want to be able to choose where you go from a wide range of destinations all over the world then the larger travel agents are more likely to be able to offer this.

Other deals include family holidays to resorts such as Disneyworld or Centre Parcs -- designed with families and their needs in mind. There are also Other package holidays include sports-related holidays such as snowboarding or skiing packages.

There are a huge number of smaller firms who offer short trips and travel deals. They may, for example, offer day trips to France or the Isle of Wight and have regular excursions to these places. Other small firms offer specialised holidays such as pilgrimages or naturist holidays. Most internet firms, however, can also offer deals to a range of destinations as many travel companies post their last minute deals with these firms who advertise them and allow consumers to compare prices online for flights and accommodation. If you are looking for a cheap, quick getaway it is well worth checking internet deals on travel agents websites. However if you want a properly planned out, well organised holiday you should consider visiting a high street firm and discussing all your requirements with an experienced agent who can help in matching a holiday to your particular requirements and make suggestions and recommendations to ensure you get the most out of your holiday.

There are many reputable firms who will be able to ensure that you get the best deal possible for your holiday. You should always shop around for the best deal and see if you can get a bargain. You could book your holiday flights with an agent for example but check Newspaper adverts for accommodation as there are many self-catering apartments available which can be rented directly from the owners. You should always get quotations although these do change over time. Most travel agents will be more than happy to spend time going over what you want from your holiday.

Atol Protection
The travel industry is currently in a state of flux when it comes to consumer protection. Much of this has been caused by the volumes of discount low cost tickets and the associated low cost airlines and travel agents that have sprung up to serve this market. Estimates are that between 10 and 15 million Britons will fly abroad without decent consumer protection in the summer of 2008.

If you cannot afford to pay for your own repatriation if the airline or tour operator you are using goes bust whilst you are away (or indeed pay for another holiday if this happens before you are due to depart), ensure that your holiday is properly covered by the Atol (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) system which is monitored by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) here in the UK.
