Travel and geography books can either serve a specific purpose or they can be purchased simply for pleasure. For example, a person looking to travel abroad may want to buy a travel guide to help them work out the best places to stay and what to do when they reach their destination. Alternatively, someone else may simply like to collect coffee table books on different countries or on geographical subjects. And, of course many book collectors and dealers specialise in the travel and geography sectors so will find plenty of interest here as well.

The first consideration for many people buying travel and geography books is who will use them and what will they be used for. Assessing these points first can help people identify which are the best books to buy. After all, a book on medieval geography may be interesting but it won't be much use to a child who actually needs a modern and up to date geography textbook for his or her school project!

Types of travel and geography books
There are a number of options when it comes to buying travel and geography books.

Travel books can take all shapes and forms. One of the most popular options here is probably the travel guide. In recent years it has, indeed, become possible to buy travel guides on even the smallest and most obscure country. Guides here may be general overviews of a country as a whole or they may be solely dedicated to a particular region or city within the country. Obviously the reader will get more detail with the latter and a general overview with the former.

These type of books contain various kinds of information. They may, for example, give a historical overview of the country and its culture. They may give information on transport, accommodation and things to see and do. Some travel books don't actually deal with a specific location but are designed to give general guidance. So, for example, a parent may buy a book on how to occupy the kids on holiday abroad and so on (with an emphasis on how to keep them quiet and occupied on a long-haul flight!). Another popular book in this sector is the language book -- these books may come with or without CDs / tapes and are designed to help people learn a foreign language before travelling abroad.

Many people also like to read general travel books that give information on the author's experiences in a certain country or on a certain trip. These books are almost like autobiographies in many ways and are often quite humorous. Finally, many travel guides and books are suitable for general reference and / or coffee table use. These will generally be larger books (so they won't do for a backpacking holiday!) and they may be primarily focused on pictures and photos rather than on giving specific information for a traveller.

There are also lots of options in the geography book sector. The primary market here is probably children of school age who may develop an interest in geography or who may need books to help them with their school work. It is possible to buy geography related books for kids from quite a young age although they obviously get more complex as the target age rises.

Geography books are also becoming an increasing popular options for people to use as coffee table books -- the images and pictures here can often be extremely interesting. And, of course many adults like to have these reference books at home for pleasure.

Many collectors also like to collect travel and geography books. They may only collect new editions or, as is often the case, they may buy old / historical books often on the second-hand market.

Buying travel and geography books second hand
There is a big market in second hand travel and geography books. In many cases, collectors find that this is the only way to buy historical or out of print books or books that are hard to find in the shops. Other people simply use this route to pick up a bargain or to buy a book cheaper than in a shop.

One thing to remember when buying travel and geography books second hand is that these books can date -- this is not so much of an issue with geography books but it can alter the usefulness of a travel guide for example. Many people sell on their guides when they have had their holiday as they won't need them anymore and this can be a great way of picking up a bargain. But, it's wise to buy a fairly recent version of the book otherwise the information it contains may be out of date. A guide to Paris from 1972, for example, may be of more historical interest than of use if making a visit this year!

It's also quite common to buy travel books second hand online. This gives more choice and a better chance of picking up a bargain. It is, however, important to check on the quality and condition of the book if it cannot be seen first-hand. So, ask the seller about the overall condition and check to see that it is not damaged or has missing pages, for example. If buying a valuable old book then ask to see pictures if possible before making a purchase -- this is a quick and easy way to check quality and condition without actually seeing the book.
