It can be difficult to know where to start looking for a job, especially if you are looking for a new start in a different sector. It can be tricky to figure out exactly what you are qualified far or what qualifications you must earn and where your new role can take you. There is hopefully some useful information here to get you off to a flying start with your search for a job in the travel industry.
Looking for a job in the travel industry
The best place to start looking for a job in the travel industry is the internet. If you don't have a connection at home then get down to your local library, job centre or internet caf and get researching. There are many websites devoted to jobs in the travel industry; hospitality jobs and some even offer some free online training. These may not be industry recognised qualifications but it will show your future employer that you have a genuine interest in working in the travel industry and committed to learning. Some sites allow you to search for jobs and also include sections on industry news, which could be worth checking out before an interview. Others even offer training courses which are now accredited by ATP, the official industry travel skills recognition scheme: by completing TTG modules you will earn points to use towards ATP membership. If there is a specific travel company or airline you know you would like to work for then check out the careers section of their websites, which should list current vacancies.
What type of job?
There are many different types of jobs within the travel industry, it's worth having a think about what type of job you'd like to do to help you in narrowing your search and when thinking about gaining relevant qualifications. If you'd like to work for an airline do you want to be ground crew or cabin crew -- or why not go for the flight deck? There are also jobs in ticketing and travel agencies to consider. You could even look into specialising in a particular type of travel such as adventure holidays, gourmet tasting holidays or eco friendly holidays. If you are looking to become a pilot then you'd better get saving for flying lessons to get your PPL pilots license, or have a look at www.ctcwings.co.uk which recruits and trains for several of the major airlines in the UK. Also don't forget the air traffic control tower, if you'd like to become an air traffic controller go to the careers section of www.nats.co.uk.
Qualifications
The type of job you are aiming for will obviously determine the type of qualifications you need. With any job you apply for, check what training you will be given on the job. There is no point wasting your time and money sitting exams if you can get someone else to pay for it! If you have applied for the position of cabin crew or pilot then the training will most definitely include on-the-job training and formal off-site courses and qualifications. The airline will want to make sure you're up to their standards before letting you loose on their unsuspecting customers. If you're looking at jobs in ticketing or in a travel agency then you will almost certainly have to complete some official qualifications.
ATP Qualifications
The ATP or Accredited Travel Professional is a skills recognition scheme for the travel industry, developed by ABTA, the Institute for Travel and Tourism (ITT) and the sector skills council for the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industries, People 1st. It provides recognition for the qualifications, skills and experience of people working in the travel industry. There is a modest annual membership fee on top of which you have to earn 20 credits a year by completing courses, so it's a good way to keep furthering your knowledge and improving your career.
CRS Training
This is the qualification you will need if you are looking for a job as a travel agent or in ticketing and it's something you can pay to do yourself. CRS stands for the online Computer Reservation System training, which will be essential knowledge if you're hoping to be booking holidays for people. There are four different systems to study; Galileo, Amadeus, Sabre and Worldspan.
Who are travel employers looking for?
Recruiters for any travel company will be looking for someone who is totally customer focused. If you have any customer service experience then don't leave this out of your CV. They need someone who can handle pressure and confrontation as things often go wrong (delays, weather, mechanical problems . . .) and they'll want to know you can handle customers in a professional manner, even when they're screaming at you. You'll also need to have an attention to detail, both in your appearance and the way in which you do things. Each company will have its own style which you will need to be willing to buy into and to represent. The travel industry is extremely competitive and each company tries to set itself apart from the rest. Don't be fooled into thinking it is a glamorous job: there is lots of hard work involved, but in return there are often a few nice perks. After all, who can complain at being given the opportunity to see the world?
