We don't just buy DVDs of films nowadays; a lot of us like to buy DVDs that are related to TV programmes. Some of us simply buy the occasional TV series because we enjoyed it first time round. Others will collect whole series of TV programmes and behind the scenes specials, or will collect DVDs within a certain genre. Some of us seriously collect DVDs related to TV programmes, either as a hobby or as part of a business.

Where to find DVDs related to TV programmes
In many cases you will find DVDs related to TV programmes on the high street. New releases don't just cover recent TV programmes; many old series or programmes are being released on DVD so you really can go back down memory lane!

As an alternative many people shop online for new DVDs related to TV programmes. This can give you some significant cost savings as most e-tailers will discount even new DVDs to try and attract customers. So, even with postage costs you can pick up boxed sets or single DVDs cheaper than in many high street stores. And, if you shop online you can access hard to find DVDs far more easily and quickly also.

In some cases you may find that you need to buy DVDs related to TV programmes second hand (or you may prefer to, as they may be cheaper!). Some deleted TV programmes and series, for example, cannot be purchased new so you may need to buy online, or if you're really lucky you might pick them up in a charity shop or second hand shop.

Things to look out for when buying DVDs related to TV programmes
If you are buying a second hand DVD then try to check out the quality before you buy it. A heavily scratched DVD may not play at all so you'll just be wasting your money. This isn't an issue if you are shopping in the high street as you can check out the condition, but it can be an issue if you are buying over the Internet (we'll give you some tips for that shortly!).

You also need to check that any DVD you buy will work on your DVD player. If it is multi-region then there will be no issue, but if your player will only play Region 1 discs then you need to buy Region 1 discs! Do also try to make sure that you don't buy pirated copies of DVDs related to TV programmes. These aren't legal and the chances are that the playback quality won't be so good and the copied discs may not have all the right features.

Buying DVDs related to TV programmes online
Buying DVDs related to TV programmes online can be cheaper and easier (especially if you are looking for rare or deleted DVDs) than shopping in the high street. You'll find the cheapest prices if you buy second hand and there are lots of options to choose from, including small e-tailers, individuals and auction sites.

You will need to check on the condition of the DVD(s) before you buy them as you cannot actually see and handle them. So, make sure to ask for a digital photo of the DVD (don't accept a stock photo as this tells you nothing about the quality of the DVD). Ask the seller if the DVD plays OK and if it is damaged or scratched in any way. A couple of minor scratches may not be an issue, but if it has been used as a Frisbee then it'll be no good to you!

Try to find out why the seller is getting rid of the DVD -- a valid reason here will give you an indication that they are being up-front about the quality of the item. Some people, for example, will simply offload stuff they no longer want, selling DVDs when they go travelling or when they need space and they'll try and make a little extra cash from unwanted or duplicate gifts.

Do make sure that the seller has some kind of returns policy in place in case the DVD does have a problem, and ask how they will send it to you. You want it delivered safely and when you want it but you don't want to be paying over the odds for postage.

And, if you are a collector (or a fervent fan!) looking to buy a rare, deleted or valuable DVD related to TV programmes then do make sure that you are getting an original copy. Make sure that the seller will use some form of insured postal service in case the DVD gets damaged or lost in transit so that you will, at least, be able to get your money back if something does go wrong.
