Age Ratings
When purchasing electronic games, you will find games for all ages with an almost infinite number of themes and varied content. Users aged 20 to 30 tend to buy the most electronic games. Electronic games publishers are not required to state age suitability ratings, except for games that have adult content. However, in Europe and the UK, a voluntary age rating method is used, similar to that used for films.

The PEGI Rating Method
In the UK, the PEGI rating method is used by the Video Standards� Council (VSC). An age rating is assigned to all electronic games. For games with adult content, the VSC will refer them to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), which may recommend that inappropriate content be altered or eliminated, and, in extreme cases, may deny a rating. The majority of electronic games sold in the UK are rated �Appropriate for players age 16 and younger.� Any game rated 18+ must be referred to the BBFC before it can be sold in the UK.

An electronic game�s age rating can be found on the packaging. The rating states whether the game is suitable for ages 3+, 7+, 12+, 16+, or 18+. It also specifies the type of content, such as violence or strong language. Parents should use the ratings as a guide to the appropriateness of the game for their children.

Genres
The term �genre� refers to the general content of an electronic game, such as: historical, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, etc. Video and computer games encompass a wide range of styles, storylines, themes, and subject matter. There are many reviews of specific games online and in video game magazines which provide information as to the content, theme, style, and quality of each. Some retailers may allow a trial use or preview period for games.

Technical Requirements
Electronic games require equipment of a certain type and platform on which to operate. Game consoles, such as PlayStation 2 and 3 or the GameCube, only play games designed to operate on their software platform. Computer games also have requirements, such as a particular processor speed, a certain operating system, and a minimum memory configuration. The minimum system requirements are to be found on each game�s packaging.

Cost
A new game may cost anywhere between �10 to �50, depending on the platform it uses. Second hand games are generally available at lower prices, typically �5 to �20.

Licensing
Computer games are sold with a single user license, called an End User License Agreement (EULA). Legally, such a product can only be installed and used on one computer. Occasionally, a publisher will allow use of a game on more than one machine if a multiple user license agreement is purchased. As with any software purchase, always be sure that you are purchasing an original product with the relevant license, whether the game is new or used. Most electronic games are delivered in specific package formats which are inserted into the relevant game console so licensing is less of an issue as the game can only be physically used on one machine at a time.
