As consumers, we are highly responsive to the word luxury. Luxury cars, luxury boats, luxury vacations and luxury homes all come with the connotation of high-quality and instant status. The luxury watch can also be included in this list of sought after items. It has become more of a style accessory than a timepiece. Since its inception, owners have found new and better ways to highlight the beauty of the wristwatch. These include encasing it in diamonds, adorning it with gems or wrapping it in precious metals of every variety. The luxury watch is held in just as much esteem as a ring or other precious jewellery. While less expensive watches are swapped to match different outfits, a luxury watch is a classic accessory. it goes with anything and everything. Further, in many cases the luxury watch is considered something of a status symbol, much like a high-spec motor vehicle. It tells of the owner's success and ability to treat themselves to the finer things. For others, the luxury watch is an investment, an heirloom that can be handed down from generation to generation. Perhaps, the owner received their own luxury watch through the passing down from a family member. In this case, the watch is esteemed for sentimental, as well as monetary, value.

HOW TO BUY A GENUINE ROLEX
Many thousands of people are buy and sell Rolex watches and other fine timepieces via the Internet. Rolex produces between half a million and a million watches every year. By comparison, counterfeiters around the world produce approximately ten million fakes in the same period. This has made an industry, which was once run by men selling watches from a suitcase on a street corner, into a multi-million pound business.

Average Rolex buyers may easily fall victim to "rip-off" merchants. While connoisseurs will certainly discern between a £3,000 Rolex and a £20 fake, the existence of large number of counterfeits inevitably affects demand at some level.

The four primary methods used by professionals are to check:
1. Serial number.
2. Model number.
3. Case back ID.
4. Movement signature.

This can be achieved by looking between the bottom lugs (where the band connects to case), top lugs, and by opening the case back.

HOW TO SPOT A FORGERY

Clear Case backs: If you encounter one of these, don't bother strapping them on. Often, a replica will have a clear case back allowing you to see the inside of the watch. Rolex does not make watches with clear case backs.

Engraved Case backs: With the exception of a rare Ladies model (1990s) and the "Sea-Dweller" model, Rolex does not engrave any logos or slogans on their case backs. Moreover, they are free of any engravings whatsoever.

Hologram Stickers: A newly Rolex watch will come with a 3-D hologram-encoded sticker on the case back. The Rolex "crown" trademark is featured just above the case reference number and can be easily identified when viewed. Often times, a fake hologram sticker won't have the 3-D effect. It is simply a hard, concrete pattern that won't change in appearance at all. If this is evident, it is definitely a counterfeit.

Date Magnification: All genuine Rolex watches, excluding the "Sea-Dweller", features the "Cyclops" that magnifies the date by two and a half times. The Cyclops on the counterfeit is often significantly smaller and out of alignment. These are common flaws made by counterfeiters and you will see many of them today with a larger font date to fool the average consumer.

Triplock Crown Seal: This relates to owners or future owners of the "Sea-Dweller," "Submariner" and the "Daytona". These three models feature the "Triplock crown." The genuine Rolex utilizes the extra seal by the rubber "O" ring on the winding tube whereas the counterfeit comes with no seal at all. It is also worth mentioning this to be a case-by-case situation when purchasing a pre-owned Rolex, in which many original Rolex parts or accessories can be replaced by other parts and accessories.

Micro-etched Crystal: In 2002, Rolex began micro etching the Rolex "coronet" or "crown" right below the 6 o'clock marker. Though it is better distinguishable using a jeweller's loupe, but the genuine "crown" is much more distinguishable and robust as opposed to the counterfeit.

ANTIQUE WATCHES
Antique watches of many established companies are available such as Rolex, Omega, Universal Geneve, Angelus, Vacheron & Constantin, Seiko, Benrus, Breitling, Gruen, Zodiac, IWC, Movado, TAG Heuer, Hamilton, Ingersoll, Shakosha (Citizen watch company of Japan) Gallet, Wittnauer, Bulova etc. There are many sources on the Internet, selling watches online. Good buys can be found at auctions and second hand markets, but the authenticity of these antique watches is doubtful.

MAINTENANCE
Maintenance of the watch is very difficult. The parts are not readily available and antique watches require specialist repair. Ensure that the seller guarantees any repair if the need arises. Most antique watch sellers also provide maintenance and care manuals. Be sure to follow the instructions.

COST
These watches are available anywhere between £200 to millions of pounds depending upon the make, the date of manufacture, the history of the watch and the jewels in the watch. The market price of the antique watch is determined by its snob appeal and social acceptance. Antique watches make wonderful gifts and give the wearer a distinct and artistic look. Owning one allows the owner to combine artistic appeal and nostalgic charm. However, they are rather costly in general and need a lot of maintenance and care.
