Finding the right dress is one of the most important activities you will undertake as part of your wedding planning. Before you start your search to buy the dress, it is important that you be prepared for the experience, which will make it more enjoyable.

Hints and Tips

When calculating your budget, don't forget the cost of your veil and headpiece as well as your shoes, lingerie, and jewellery. Keep in mind that nearly all dresses need alterations. Decide on the style(s) of dresses you like. Choosing the right silhouette for your figure is very important but you will only really know this once you've tried on several. Contact the shops in advance and make an appointment. Most shops will require this as it enables them to give you a very personal service. Choosing the right bridal shop and consultant can make the difference between an enjoyable or stressful experience. So try a few until you are happy with the advice and help you are receiving. Make sure you wear your best underwear for trying on dresses. A neutral colour and well fitting underwear will show off your figure and dress in the best light. Only take a few people with you when choosing your dress. Whether it's your mother, sister or best friend, ensure they give you an honest opinion. Don't expect to find the perfect dress on your first visit to the shops. Each time you try on a dress, choose what you like and dislike about it. This will help you eliminate dresses, helping you make the final decision.

How soon you start looking for a dress depends on:

1. Budget
Depending on the amount you wish to spend might mean choosing an off the peg or made to measure dress. However, ensure you leave a minimum of twelve weeks, as off the peg dresses aren't ever literally "off the peg." If you choose made-to-measure, the wait can be as long as nine months.

2. Diets
If you are planning to lose weight before the wedding day, bear this in mind. It is important when choosing your dress, as a style that suits your shape now may not be right on your slimmer frame.

Picking the perfect dress for your big day is a huge decision, so make sure you give yourself enough time to research and select a range of dresses. Take time to review all your choices, if possible with some close friends and family. Once you have been through process you will have a good shortlist or even selected the dream dress for your day.

THE GROOM
A survey revealed that 62% of grooms choose to hire their wedding outfit spending an average of £255.

Style solutions
There are plenty of choices to ensure you look the part, including frock coats, which finish just above the knee, morning coats, also known as tails, dinner jackets, and Nehru collar jackets. The first thing to do is decide which one suits you and, most important of all, the style of your wedding. A dinner jacket is great for a sophisticated city hotel but it will look over the top at a village church. Frock coats are great for disguising a thicker waist, so can be more flattering than the cut-away style of tails, which should only be worn if it's a very formal occasion, or if you have a good physique. The trick is to make a hired suit look made to measure. Sleeves and trousers need to be the correct length. If you're wearing a morning suit, the tails should not come lower than an inch below the knee and it should be possible to do up the jacket buttons, even though the style is to wear it unbuttoned.

When you collect the suits ensure every man in the wedding party tries his outfit on again. If your fittings were before a very indulgent stag weekend or someone's been overdoing the Guinness some adjustments may be necessary. It's best to know as quickly as possible so the shop can sort out replacements. Your accessories can make or break the way your look but don't be stifled by convention. A frock coat can just as easily be worn with a brightly coloured shirt and matching tie as it can with a traditional waistcoat and cravat. It's up to you to bring individual style to your wedding day. One thing to bear in mind is the colour scheme for the wedding. If the bridesmaids are wearing lilac, it's popular for the best man and ushers to wear a lilac waistcoat or a lilac tie. Dressing in the shop is easy; with assistants, hovering around to make sure you're cravat is properly tied. Most shops will teach you how to tie a cravat or bow tie, so if in doubt, ask. However, unless you're confident of your abilities, go for a ready-tied bow tie. If you're getting married on a Saturday, hired outfits usually need to be returned on the Sunday or Monday. If you're jetting off on honeymoon, put the best man in charge of getting everything back to the shop in time, otherwise you'll be charged extra.

SHOES
Wedding shoes are often left to the last minute. This is a major mistake as some styles can be difficult to find. Bear in mind that the shoes you choose should be both great looking and comfortable. There's a lot of walking and standing to be done at your wedding. Hobbling is definitely not elegant, and will spoil your perfect image.

For the grooms, the choice is more restricted compared to the women. A good choice would be patent leather shoes or low-cut ones. They will look both elegant and smart.

For the brides, keep your dress in mind when you choose. A simple gown would call for a simple shoe, while a more elaborate gown would allow for a more embellished shoe. Another thing to keep in mind is the heel of the shoe. You might look great in really high heels, but consider how you will feel after almost two hours in them, carrying a ton of weight in your gown and train. You may well end up in agony, which is not a good way to celebrate your special day. No matter what kind of shoes you choose, it's always a great idea to break them in before the big day. Wear them for at least a week to really get used to them and have them form properly to your foot. This way there'll be no blisters marring your special day.
