It may seem that cleaning your windows is a simple job that you can do yourself, but the chances are, you won't ever get round to doing it! Also, once you get past the ground floor of your property then window cleaning can actually be a precarious and downright dangerous thing to do. So, for most of us the solution is to find a window cleaner: but how do you go about choosing a window cleaner?
How to Find a Window Cleaner
The easiest way to find a window cleaner is actually to take a look outside your neighbour's houses, find one that obviously has their windows cleaned regularly (and effectively!) and then ask them who cleans their windows! Recommendation of trades-people can go a long way to making it easier to find a reliable and effective person or company to work with.
You may also find that you'll be 'leafleted' by window cleaners every now and then, or you may simply pick up the Yellow Pages or a telephone directory to find someone who can help you out. And, of course, today you can always use the Internet. There are all kinds of sites out there that list trades-people such as window cleaners which may be a place for you to start.
Things to Consider before Choosing a Window Cleaner
Compared to other jobs that you hire trades-people for, window cleaning may not seem so important, however you still need to take care before asking anyone to take on the job. For example, if you are working on a personal recommendation from a neighbour or friend, ask them how much they are charged, how often their windows are cleaned and how happy they are with the service. A happy cheerful window cleaner who does a sloppy job may brighten up your day but he won't get your windows clean!
Although (unlike many other trades-people) window cleaners don't have to meet trade standards and conditions, it is still important to choose a window cleaner that takes himself/herself seriously and that you feel comfortable with. So, for example, you need to check that the window cleaner has taken out insurance (look for public liability insurance here) to cover themselves if they have an accident that damages you or your property. If they don't have insurance, for example, and then manage to break your window when they put up their ladder, you may not get any money out of them to pay for the damage. If they have insurance then the chances are that their insurer will pay. So, don't go for a cleaner without insurance cover.
Safety is another issue here and many modern window cleaners prefer to use a water fed pole system which allows them to clean windows without having to use a ladder. If the window cleaner you're thinking of using still uses ladders then have a quick look at them to see what condition they are in. You might be surprised at how many people set up in business with badly maintained equipment!
You also need to think about safety issues from a security perspective. Although you won't necessarily have your window cleaner in the house, he or she may get a bird's eye view of your house layout and contents through the windows so it is important to try and find a window cleaner that is honest and reliable. Anybody can set themselves up to earn some extra cash (without declaring their income) as a window cleaner, but try to avoid dealing with this kind of outfit. The chances are they won't have adequate insurance cover, and they won't necessarily turn up on a consistent basis or do a good job. A good way to work out if someone is just looking for extra cash in hand is to ask if you can pay them by cheque; many 'non-declaring' window cleaners won't take a cheque. They also won't bother listing their businesses in either offline or online directories.
Do ask your window cleaner how often they will clean your windows - some people like them cleaned once a month, and others prefer them done once a fortnight. Unfortunately you cannot generally work out how reliable a window cleaner will be at turning up on a regular basis until you start using them . Do bear in mind that they may not clean windows in really bad weather!
Finally, think hard before using a window cleaner that charges a lot less than other operators; you can get a quick cost comparison by calling a few companies to find out how much they will charge. In many cases extremely cheap costs may not get you the best quality of service or reliability. Sometimes you have to pay a little more to get a little more.
