The fragrance sector has grown significantly in recent years. All kinds of companies, designers and even famous individuals have moved into the market which gives women a lot of choice when it comes to choosing and buying a fragrance that they like at the right price. The fact that so many retailers also sell over the Internet and that there are also specialist fragrance etailers in the sector now makes it a lot easier to find cost effective choices here as well.
Popular types of women's fragrances
There is a vast choice in the women's fragrance sector now -- it's even possible to buy whole sets of related products such as soap, body lotions and bath oils in your favourite perfume. Some women simply buy a fragrance that they like whilst others prefer to buy certain brand or designer names and will search for a fragrance that they like within a certain range. Costs here also vary -- designer names often come at a premium.
There are generally four main options. Perfume is usually the purest type of scent which explains why it also tends to be the most expensive! Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette are basically fragrances that are less concentrated than the perfume on which they are based. Eau de Parfum will last for longer than Eau de Toilette. Eau de Cologne is not really based on a specific perfume fragrance but is a mix of perfumed oils.
Women's fragrances also come in all shapes and sizes and to suit all budgets. Some women like to use a spray fragrance whilst others prefer to dab on perfume.
Considerations to make before buying women's fragrances
The fragrance sector is big business and this is a popular area for fakes. If you see a popular or designer perfume or fragrance for sale (either in a store or online) at a fantastically cut price rate then you'll need to check that it is the real deal and not a fake product. The fact is that a fake fragrance will not really smell the same as the original on which it was based and will not be as well made or last as long.
It's always important to make sure that a fragrance suits you before you buy it. You may really like the smell of a perfume in the air (or on somebody else!) but you'll only know that it suits your skin type by testing it out. If you are looking to buy a fragrance online that you've never tried before then make the effort to visit a high street store first and try to test it out. You can still buy it online but you'll at least know whether it suits you or not. This is especially important if you (or the person you're buying for) has problems with allergies and reactions to skin products.
Another consideration if you're buying women's' fragrances online is to make sure that the site packages the fragrance up well enough so that it doesn't get damaged in transit. It's also important to find out what the site does if you need to make a return for whatever reason and whether there will be costs involved.
Considerations to make before buying women's fragrances second hand
It's quite common to be able to pick up a bargain by buying women's fragrances second hand although this may not seem the obvious route to take. The key thing to remember here is that you're looking to buy an
unused
fragrance whether buying online or in a second hand store.
If buying online then you may need to ask the seller a few questions to check that the fragrance is in the right condition for you. This is also important as it will help you work out whether the fragrance is an original product rather than a cheap knock-off or fake. If a seller on an auction site, for example, is listing 25 bottles of a designer perfume for sale then you need to know how she/he came to have so many for sale at once. That's an awful lot of unwanted Christmas or birthday gifts!
In most cases people will sell on women's fragrances simply because they don't need or want them. They may have been given them as duplicate gifts or they may have been given the wrong perfume as a present. It's important to find out why the seller is selling the item before making a purchase.
You also need to check, as already mentioned, that the fragrance hasn't been used. This is easy to do in a store but not as easy online. Try asking the seller directly if the packaging has been opened or if it is intact. Ask them how long they've had the fragrance -- if it's been sitting in the back of a cupboard for the last 10 years then you probably don't really want it! If, for whatever reason, the packaging has been opened ask them directly if the fragrance has ever been used. Finally, ask to see a digital photo of the packaging or fragrance bottle so you can see for yourself that everything is OK.
And, if buying online, it's important to check how the seller will package it up and post it. It's important that they take the time to make sure that it gets to you in one piece.
